Lecture Introduction To Smith Charts

The document provides an outline for a lecture on Smith charts. It begins with an introduction that the Smith chart is a polar plot of the reflection coefficient Γ. It then discusses that the Smith chart normalizes impedances to the characteristic impedance Z0. Several slides derive the relationships between the reflection coefficient Γ, the normalized impedance z, and the real and imaginary components of both. Through these derivations, the Smith chart maps the reflection coefficient Γ to the normalized impedance z in a way that allows impedance matching on transmission lines to be visualized graphically.

Plot of Reflection

Slide 3
Polar Plot of Reflection Coefficient Γ
The Smith chart is based on a polar plot of the
voltage reflection coefficient G. The outer
boundary corresponds to |G| = 1. The reflection
coefficient in any passive system must be Γ ≤ 1.

Slide 5
Normalized Impedance z
All impedances on the Smith Chart are normalized. This is usually done with respect to
the characteristic impedance of the transmission line Z0.

Reflection Coefficient Γ from Normalized Impedance

The reflection coefficient Γ from a load can be written in terms of normalized impedances.

Real & Imaginary Parts of Normalized Load

The normalized load impedance 𝑧L and reflection coefficient Γ can be written in terms of
real and imaginary parts.
