Class, let’s all stand and put ourselves in
the presence of our Lord. Students will pray.

As we go on to our discussion, I want to remind you of

our class rules.
First, always sanitize your hands before and
after handling the materials/papers to/from your
classmates.
Second, if possible, avoid borrowing materials
to your classmates.
Lastly, raise your right hand if you want to
answer or ask for clarification/s. Yes, ma’am.

story of _____?
Correct!
Now, I need two volunteers to arrange the story
board of Yeh-Shen according to their order.

The fish bone is the one who

helps Yeh-Shen. (Answers
may vary)
How this Cinderella story differ from the regular
one that we know?

Very good!
 The bones of the fish helped her instead of a
fairy godmother.
 When losing her slipper her dress become rags
again.
 Lastly, she doesn't have to be home by
midnight unlike the common story of
Cinderella that we know.
C. Motivation

Directions: With a selection of letters to choose
from, players must guess the correct word without
getting two errors. If you got two errors or
mistake, you will be out of the game. But if you
already know the answer, just raise your hand and
say the correct word.

So again, what are the examples of grammatical signals
being mentioned?

Excellent!

D. Presentation
Discussion
Learners will look for the grammatical signals being
used then they will identify the 2 ideas in each the
sentences.

 Trina’s flower died because she

forgot to water them.
 I touched a hot pan, so I burned my
hand.
 I dropped my glass, so it broke on
the floor

 Katie ate all of her breakfast

high, so the cake burned.

Did we use any grammatical signals or expressions

in sentence number 1?
If yes, what is it? because
Any idea how many ideas that we have in the first
sentence?
That’s right, we have two. The first one is “Trina’s

Let’s read and observe our first sentence. flower died”

Second one is
 Trina’s flower died because she forgot to water
“She forgot to water

them”
What is our grammatical signal in this sentence?
You got it right! The grammatical signal being used
in this sentence is the word “because”.
Can you give now the two ideas in this sentence?

Very good! *Learners can give their

The first one is “Trina’s flower died” answer/s or idea/s

And the other one? “She forgot to water them”

The question now is, what statement shows “why Yes

something happens/happened” So
-she forgot to water them I touched a hot pan and
So, what is the result or outcome of her action? I burned my hand
- Trina’s flower died
I touched a hot pan
Let’s have another example.
 I touched a hot pan, so I burned my hand. I burned my hand
Do we have a grammatical signal?
What is it?
What are the two ideas?
Cause

Which one tells why something has happened? Effect

Which one tells the consequences or result of the
action?

* Learners will answer what the jumbled words are.

What do you call to the statement that tells why
something happens?
How about the statement that tells you the
consequences or result of their action?

Excellent!
It rained and Carolina got wet
We call them, cause and effect. When we say cause,
cause - is the reason for a situation or change. (tell
It rained
us the question “why”) while the effect is the result
or the consequence. (tell us the question “what”)

She got wet.

How is that? Let’s try to identify which one is the
effect and cause in the sentences.
Yes
Example:
So
S1: It rained, so Carolina got wet
What are the 2 ideas happened in the sentence?

What is the reason or cause why Carolina got wet?

So?
What is the effect or result of it to Carolina?
After the rain she got? Phil stayed up late
Phil was tired in the morning.
Do we have any signal words?
What is that? Phil was tired in the morning
That’s right. Effect

Another sentence is… Phil stayed up late

S2: Phil was tired in the morning because he
stayed up late. He became/was tired in the
Again, let’s start by looking to the two ideas. morning.
What are the ideas do we have? He became/was tired in the
morning.
Good.
What happened to Phil according to the sentence?
Is that the cause or effect?
If that is the effect, what is now the cause or the
reason why that certain thing happened?
So, the consequence or result of Phil staying up
late is?
better grades.
What is that again?
Cause: Play in the mud
Very Good! Result: You will get muddy
Do you know that cause and effect relation occur
every day?
How?
Let’s have an example.
 If you study hard, you’ll get what?
Answer: get better grades.
So, cause is “If you study hard” and the result will
be, “You’ll get better grades”
Let’s have another sentence.
 Play in the mud and you will get muddy.
What is the cause and effect?

That is correct.
One easy way to spot cause and effect relationship
in books is to look out for signal words.

Here are some cause and effect signal words and

phrases you might come across.

“Cause”
Because, because of, since, as a result, now that.

“Effect”
So, Therefore, Consequently, hence

Let see if you can spot signal words in a text then

work out which is the cause and effect.
This time, we are going to look for the signal

she treated her poorly. And effect is “So she treated
her poorly”
Q. Why Yeh-Shen’s stepmother treated her poorly?

Can you find a signal word or phrase?

Can you tell me where is the cause and the effect?

The cause is “Yeh-Shen’s fish

killed by her step mother
And the effect is “she is
distraught and crying”
Very good class!

The only friend Yeh-Shen had was a beautiful fish with

big golden eyes.

After her stepmother hearing about the fish, she disguised

herself as Yen-Shen and enticed the fish from the water.
She stabbed it with a dagger, and cooked the fish for
dinner so Yeh-Shen was distraught when she learned of the
fish’s death.

Can you identify the cause and effect in this passage? Because

someone would pick Yeh-Shen

daughter.
Q. Can you spot the signal word that tells the reason
why Yeh-Shen’s stepmother won’t allow her to go to
the festival?
Yes!
So the reason why Yeh-Shen’s stepmother didn’t allow
her to go to the spring festival is?

It answers the question “why” so, is it a cause or

effect?
How about the effect?

Yes, you are right!

The stepmother and the daughter left for the

festival leaving Yeh-Shen behind. Yeh-Shen
wanting desperately to go asked the bones for
clothes to wear to the festival. Suddenly she was Yeh-Shen lose her slipper

looking her way. The daughter and step-mother
moved closer to her for they seemed to recognize
this beautiful person. Seeing that she would be
found out, Yeh-Shen dashed out of the village
leaving behind one of the golden slippers.

Q. What did Yeh-Shen Lose in the festival?

The king didn’t believe that

Yeh-Shen is the owner because
Which one is the cause and the effect? yeh-Shen wore rags clothes.

The king’s men waited out of site. All the women

came to try on the shoe. One dark night Yeh-Shen
slipped quietly across the pavilion, took the tiny
golden slipper and turned to leave, but the king’s
men rushed out and arrested her. She was taken to
the king who was furious for he couldn’t believe
that any one in rags could possibly own a golden
slipper. As he looked closer at her face he was
struck by her beauty and he noticed she had the
tiniest feet.

Q. Why didn’t the king believe that Yeh-Shen was

the owner of the golden slipper at first?

D. Generalization
So, remember, cause and effect refer to the
relationship _________. (Learners will give what
they have learned)
Answer: between events or things, where one is the
result of the other or others.
Cause tells “why”
And effect tells us the “what”

In Science, studying cause-and-effect relationships
is the foundation and is one of the most common
methods being used to explore the world around us.

Remember, a cause-and-effect relationship can

have multiple causes and one effect or vice versa.

In composition, cause and effect is a method of

paragraph or essay development in which a writer
analyzes the reasons for—and/or the consequences
of—an action, event, or decision.
