Research Problem Statement

This document outlines the key elements in developing a research problem statement, including defining a research problem, the six components of an effective research statement, characteristics and sources of research problems, and factors that determine the research problem. It provides examples of well-structured problem statements and criteria for evaluating problem statements. The objectives are to understand how to identify a research problem and formulate a clear problem statement that meets established criteria.

objectives:
At the end of these lecture we must be able to:
 Identify research problem.
 List The research statement should include six elements.
 List Sources of nursing research problem.
 Identify Factors determining the research problem.
 List Steps to be followed to formulate research problems.
 Identify Critique Problem Statement.
 List Guidelines for critiquing the problem statement.
 Identify Criteria Of Research Title.
Definitions :

Research Problem: A situation or circumstance that requires a

solution to be described, explained, or predicted. It is an unsatisfactory situation
that wants you to confront.

Research Statement: A statement specifies exactly what is being studied.

Problem Statement for Research: A problem statement is a move that a

document makes to help the reader realize why that document is important.

The research statement should include six elements :

1. Information about the research topic that provoked the study
2. The scope of the problem (e.g.. how many people are affected by it).
3. Why it is important to study the problem
4. How nursing science would be influenced by the study
5. General characteristics of the population of interest

6. The overall goal or aim of the study or the question to be answered.

Exampls of problem statement :

Research topic
Factors that influence adaptation of adloscent with diabetes

Problem statement
This study investigate influence of age ,coping behavior, social ,
physiological, psychological status on adaptation with diabetes in adloscent

Research topic
Influence of stress management training on hypertension disease

Problem statement
This study investigate influence of cognitive behavior management
,intervention on stress ,cping patient, quality of life on persons with hypertension

Creteria of research problem (SMART) :

 Specific: the problem should be specifically stated A research problem that
is too general increases the scope of the project, the relevant literature
review that has to be covered, and time as well as the cost of the project.

 Example:
the effect of providing immediate feedback to university students

 the impact of providing immediate feedback via electronic responders in

graduate classes

 Measurable : it is easy to be measured by using research instrument or

equipment
 Applicable(achievable): the data can be achieved by using correct
statistical tool in this specific problem
 Researchable: Observation or other data collection in the real world can
provide the answer

Ex : what is the best way to provide health education to type1 diabetes

patient

Time bound : time frame is required in every activity and it is better to be

short in completion of activity

EX: At which age it is better to provide health education to type1 diabetes

patient-age5,age6,age7?

Sources of nursing research problem :

1-Practical Experience :
the nurses every day experience provides a rich supply of problems
investigations.
Example: nurse finds that unrestricted visiting hours in surgical wards
reduced the analgesic demand among postoperative patients.
2-Nursing literature:
The beginning nurse researcher would project from regularly reading the
nursing research journal, books & articles relating to the subject of our
interest.
3-Theory:
The third major source of problems lies in theoretical system which has been
developed in nursing.
Example: Sealy's (1956) theory of adaptations to stress.
4- Previous research :
Reporting or replicating previous nursing is another option for the nurse
researcher.
The purpose of replication is to validate and support earlier findings.
5-Social issues :
Sometimes, topics are suggested by social or political issues of relevance to
the health care community.
Example, HIV/AIDS, female feticide, sexual harassment, domestic violence
6-Brainstorming :
Where an intensified discussion among interested people of the profession
is conducted to find more ideas to formulate a good research problem.
Example, having brainstorming session with other nurses, researchers.
7-Consultation with experts :
Experts are believed to have sound experience of their respective field,
which may suggest significant problem to be studied.

Criteria for selecting good research problem:-

1- Significance to nursing profession

• Nursing profession and health care system will benefit from the study
• Provides solutions of current nursing practice needs
2-Original
Research problem should be new, unique in itself. To extend the growth of
existing body of knowledge on a profession -
3-Feasibility of study;
The feasibility of research problem in reference to time, facilities, equipment
& money, & ethical considerations should be checked
 Time;
It is a wise to allow more time than seems to be needed unexpected delays
frequently occur.
 Cost;
• All research project cost money
• Some studies are more expensive than others.
• The researcher must consider realistically the financial resources available
 Equipment and supplies;
 Availability of subjects.
 Ethical consideration;
The purpose selected for investigation must be ethical
EX; subject's rights and rights of the setting are projected.
 Administrative support.

4- Specialization of researcher.
5- Accordance with competence of researcher
6-Researchable.
Research problem considered good if data are available and accessible to
answer to specific questions can be found.
7-Current:
8-Interesting:
-A research problem can only be considered good if it is accordance with
researcher’s field of interest.
-So that researcher conduct the study with full motivation.

Formulating the research problem :

1-Selection of research areas.
2-Reviewing the literature &theories.
3-Delimiting the research topic.
4-Evaluating the research problem.
5-Formulating final statement of research problem

Problem statement format :

a. Declarative format:
In this format, a research problem is stated in declarative statement.
Example: “The relationship between the nurses’ job satisfaction and
tendency to leave work”
b. Interrogative format:
In interrogative format, a research problem is stated in question form.
Example: is there a relationship between the nurses’ job satisfaction and
their tendency to leave the work setting?

Critique Problem Statement :

1. Is it presented at the beginning of research report.

2. Is it found in the abstract, in the body of research ,at the end of
introduction
3. Is it clear and concise.
4. Is it written in interrogative or declarative sentences form.
5. Is it contain the following elements:
Research design - Variables of the study and relationship between
variables - Population – Setting – Time – Direction of the study.
6. Is it containing both variables and population.
7. Is it indicates that study will be ethical, feasible and significant to
nursing.

Criteria of Research Title :

1. Describe the content of paper

2. It should not too long or too short (clear – concise)
3. Title is about 8-12 words long
4. The title is centered in the top of page number 1
5. It should mention both dependent and independent variables
6. All nouns are capitalized in title
7. The title should contain the keywords describing the word
8. The title is not contain any abbreviations or chemical formula

Factors determining the research problem:

• Ethical issue
• Significance for nursing Personal motivation.
• Qualifications of the researcher.
• Feasibility of the study.
• Support from administration.
• Availability of subjects.
• the financial resources available.
