SECTION A (70 Marks)
Answer all questions in this section. Each question carries ten (10) marks
2. a) i) According to the Newton’s third law, action and reaction forces are always
existing in
pair and are in opposite direction. Will they cancel each other on addition?
( 03 marks )
b) A 10g bullet is fired at 200 m/sec into a 1kg block attached to a spring on a
smooth horizontal table. If the spring constant is 200 Nm−1, find the maximum
compression of the spring. ( 04 marks )
3. a) What would be the effect on the weight of a body if the earth stops rotating
about its axis?
( 02 marks )
b) State of weightlessness can be observed in four situations, mention them.
( 04 marks )

What is the ratio of their amplitudes? ( 04 marks )
4. a) i) State two assumptions that are made on the treatment of projectile motion.
( 02 marks )
ii) The velocity of a maximum height of a projectile is half of its initial velocity
of projectionuo . What is the horizontal range of the projectile? ( 03 marks )
ii) An aero plane travelling horizontally at78 m/sec at a height of 210m drops a
bomb to hit a target. At what horizontal distance should the bomb be released
so as to hit the target?
( 03 marks )
5. a) i) Draw the energy distribution curve of black body radiation. ( 04 marks )
b) The piston of a bicycle pump is slowly moved in until the volume of the air
enclosed is one fifth of the total volume of the pump and is at room
temperature of 290K. The outlet is then sealed and the piston is suddenly
drawn out to a full extension. No air passes the piston. Find the temperature of
the air in the pump immediately after withdrawing the piston, assuming that air
is a perfect gas withγ =1.4 . ( 04 marks )
ii) The peak of Mountain Kilimanjaro is closer to the sun than a boy on the
level ground. During a hot day, a boy on the level ground surfers hotness than
the ice on the peak survive while is closer to the sun. How can you explain
this? ( 03 marks )
b) A box is made up of wood 2.0cm thick covered with felt 1.0cm thick, the
effective area being1.1 m2. Ice is stored in the box which is in a room at15 ° .
How much ice will melt per hour? ( 05 marks )
Answer only two (2) questions from this section. Each question carries
fifteen (15) marks
b) For the circuit shown in figure below, find the power dissipated in the
transistor. Assume β=100 and V BE=0.7 V ( 05 marks )
