2. Answer all questions in section A and any two questions from section B
3. Section A carries seventy (70) marks and section B carries thirty (30) marks

Answer all questions in this section. Each question carries ten (10) marks

1. a) Apply the method of dimension to:


i. Derive an expression for the lift force of a helicopter due to the spinning of
blades in air. ( 04 marks )

rotational kinetic energy, I is the moment of inertia of a rotating body and
ω is the angular speed of a rotating body. ( 03 marks )

b) The frequency of vibration of a body in a horizontal platform is given by

3. a) What would be the effect on the weight of a body if the earth stops rotating
about its axis?

b) State of weightlessness can be observed in four situations, mention them.

bomb to hit a target. At what horizontal distance should the bomb be released
so as to hit the target?

5. a) i) Draw the energy distribution curve of black body radiation. ( 04 marks )

ii) State Stefan’s law. ( 02 marks )

b) The piston of a bicycle pump is slowly moved in until the volume of the air
enclosed is one fifth of the total volume of the pump and is at room
temperature of 290K. The outlet is then sealed and the piston is suddenly
drawn out to a full extension. No air passes the piston. Find the temperature of
the air in the pump immediately after withdrawing the piston, assuming that air
is a perfect gas withγ =1.4 . ( 04 marks )

6. a) i) What is thermal resistance of a substance? ( 02 marks )

ii) The peak of Mountain Kilimanjaro is closer to the sun than a boy on the
level ground. During a hot day, a boy on the level ground surfers hotness than
the ice on the peak survive while is closer to the sun. How can you explain

b) A box is made up of wood 2.0cm thick covered with felt 1.0cm thick, the

ii) Determine the momentum of a drifted electron in a conductor of length 10m


carrying a current of 0.5A. ( 03 marks )

b) i) State the maximum power theorem. ( 02 marks )

ii) A battery of 24V and internal resistance of 10Ω is connected to a variable


resistor. At what value of current drawn from the battery, the rate of heat
produced in the resistor is a maximum? Find also its value. ( 04 marks )

c) i) A 2H inductor of resistance 80Ω is connected in series with 420Ω resistor


and a 240V, 50Hz supply. Find
i. The current in the circuit. ( 03 marks )
ii. The phase angle between the applied p.d and the current. ( 02 marks )

9. a) Explain the following;


i. Base of any transistor is made thin. ( 02 marks )
ii. Collector is made very wide compared to base and emitter. ( 02 marks )

b) For the circuit shown in figure below, find the power dissipated in the
transistor. Assume β=100 and V BE=0.7 V ( 05 marks )
