Linear and Non-LInear Text

The document provides instructions for two transcription exercises: 1) Organize key ideas from a speech about law into a chart comparing what law must and must not do. The speech discusses how law defines relationships between people and institutions and aims to lead these relationships to equitable ends. 2) Transcode information from a Venn diagram comparing plants and animals into a single paragraph text. The diagram shows differences (plants can photosynthesize, animals can move) and similarities (both are living organisms).

LINEAR AND NONLINEAR TEXTS

Week 16 (January 08, 2021)

Year and section: _______________________________ Score: ______________________

A. TRANSCODING LINEAR TO NONLINEAR TEXT. Read the following excerpt from an

inspirational talk given by Honorable Estelito R. Mendoza before the graduating class of the University
of the Philippines College of Law 1977. In the chart found on the next page, organize his ideas about
law.

Law, you must remember, encompasses life itself. It defines and regulates the relationship among
men, between man and the institutions he has devised (such as government), the relationship among nations,
between peoples. Law, as I have stressed, does not necessarily assure an orderly relationship but endeavours
to lead these relationships to peaceful, productive, and equitable ends. Law is no longer a mere arbiter; law
now leads; it is now a vehicle of movement. But if law is to truly lead and propel change, it must be
responsive – its response quick and immediate – and it must rest on the people’s will.
Sedilla & Villamin, 2013
As cited by
Agustin, Gil, Sedilla , Vilamin , Aguado, & Papang , 2020

According to Honorable Estelito P. Mendoza…

B. TRANSCODING NONLINEAR TO LINEAR TEXT. Study the given Venn diagram which shows
the differences and the similarities of plants and animals. Transcode the information from the
diagram into a linear text – one paragraph text.
 Take note that the information that overlaps refer to the similarity or common characteristics of the
plants and animals while those from the outside (blue and green) are the differences of the two.
