EXTENSIVE READING:
EXCITING PLACES
I/ Objectives:
- To read factual texts about exciting places
- To read independently and work out meaning through context
II/ Procedures: ( 90 mins )

Part Teacher's activities


- Greeting
- Activity:
 Ss are divided in to 2 teams making 2 lines
1/ Warm-up  In 1 minute, ss in 2 teams take turns to go to the board and write the names of
(5’) exciting places that they think of (caves, mountains, …)
 Teams writing more places wins
 T ask ss to explain why they think those places are exciting
2/ My life in Pre-teach
the Arctic Lead-in
- Ask ss: “What do you know about Artic?” (Where, weather, what in Arctic,
animals, …)
“Do you think people can live in Arctic?”
Teach
Presentation:
- Tell ss that they are going to read about life in Arctic
- T asks Ss to look at the text and two pictures
- T calls individuals to answer questions:
“What do people wear?”
“What are houses like?”
“How do people travel?”
“Where do you think this text is from?” “How do you know?” (an email)
Practice
Listen and read.
- T plays the recording for Ss to listen and follow.
- Play the recording again for ss to underline the words they don’t know.
- T writes new words on board
- T asks if any student can pronounce and explain the meanings of the words
- T corrects as necessary and explains again
- Ss repeat the new words
- Ss take turns to read aloud parts of the text
Post-teach
Controlled activities
Read again and circle the correct word:
- T explains that ss should read the text again and circle the correct word

- T gives an example: T reads 1st sentence and asks ss to identify where they can
find the answer in the text

- T calls some ss to read the full sentences with answers and point out where they

 Who does Kirima live with?
 How old are her brothers?
 Where does she live?
 Why is Barrow city famous?
 How can people see when the sky is dark during winter?
 What dangerous animals try to come into Kirima’s school?
 What do people in Kirima’s village usually do at the weekends?
 What do people do in the summer?
- T asks groups for answers
Free activities
Interview:
- T prepares interview form with questions:
 Would you like to go to the Arctic? Why?
 How is your life different from Kirima’s life?
- Ss go around the class to interview the classmates and write the information
- T calls some ss to report the information
- T calls 1 student to read facts about the Arctic for the class
Break Time (5’)

Lead in:
3/ Life in the - T asks ss: “Have you ever seen a desert?”
Desert - “What is desert like?” (weather, trees, animals, …)
Presentation:
- Tell ss that they are going to read about life in the desert
- Ask ss to look at the picture and describe what they can see.
- Ask ss: “What kind of text do you think it is?”
“Where can you find it?” (geography book/website)
Practice:
