Cloud Computing Concepts
• “Cloud computing is shared pools of configurable computer system resources and higher-
level services that can be rapidly provisioned with minimal management effort, often over
the Internet.”
-- Wikipedia

• The NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) defines “Cloud Computing” as:

“Cloud computing is a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network

access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage,
applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal
management effort or service provider interaction.” (Ubiquitous: available everywhere,
globally) 4

Cloud Computing Concepts Continued…

• Cloud computing providers own

and maintain the network-
connected hardware required for
these application services, while
you provision and use what you
need for your workloads.
• Cloud computing is an approach
that uses the efficient pooling of
an on-demand, self-managed,
virtual infrastructure.

Deployment models: Private Cloud and Public Cloud

• The traditional cloud model is referred to as

the public cloud.
• The Public cloud resources (like servers and
storage) are owned and operated by a third-party
cloud service provider and delivered over the
Internet.
• For example, Google Cloud Platform, Amazon AWS,
Azure from Microsoft.

Deployment models: Private Cloud and Public Cloud Continued…

• In addition to a public cloud model, businesses can also

use a private cloud where the infrastructure is dedicated
to them.
• Private clouds are pools of resources dedicated to a single
enterprise, within a company – for private use.
• Often used by government agencies, financial institutions, any
other mid- to large-size organizations with business-critical
operations
• Finally, a hybrid cloud model represents a mixture of
public and private cloud models.
• Bring Cloud services to your datacenter
• Often called “the best of both worlds,” hybrid clouds combine
on-premises infrastructure, or private clouds, with public
clouds so organizations can reap the advantages of both. 7
• Example: Google Anthos, AWS Outposts, Azure Stack

Cloud Services: IaaS, PaaS, SaaS
Cloud-computing providers offer their "services" according to
different models, which happen to form a stack

Cloud lowers the “Total Cost of Ownership”

Look inside a Cloud datacenter
• New-age equipment: Data centers have been witness to
migration from rack servers to blade and blade-like servers.
• A current trend is the convergence or hyper convergence of
servers and storage into a single box, which is being driven by
the availability of solid-state drives.

Google Cloud Platform

• Launched: April 7, 2008; 13 years ago

• Google is an internet-centric provider of technology and services. Google has had an a PaaS offering
since 2008, but did not enter the cloud IaaS market until Google Compute Engine was launched in
June 2012 (with general availability in December 2013).
• Google groups its IaaS data centers into regions, each of which contains at least three zones (data
centers).

GCP services
• GCP has a well-implemented, reliable and performant core of fundamental IaaS and
PaaS capabilities — including an increasing number of unique and innovative capabilities
— even though its scope of services is not as broad as that of the other market leaders.
• Google has been most differentiated on the forward edge of IT, with deep investments in
analytics and ML, and many customers who choose Google for strategic adoption have
applications that are anchored by BigQuery.
