INTRODUCTION

Background

Landscaping is a fusion of many disciplines – horticulture, engineering, the

life sciences, art and design, physical labor, and business management. A

landscape maintenance company is an ideal business to operate out of your

home because most of your equipment can stay on the truck at night, you need

little office space, and you don’t need to be open to the public (De Young, 2004).

The researchers believe there is a niche in the lawn care and landscaping

industry in Tandag City for a business specifically tailored to meet the needs of

retiree homeowners and senior citizens. The researchers has lived in this place

their hometown and listened to conversations amongst friends and neighbors of

their grandfather regarding the poor service and performance of their respective

landscaping services. According to Thomas (2009) used the phrase “Mow, Blow,

and Go” when describing what they receive from the existing landscapers.

The researchers believe that senior citizens/retiree homeowners would be

willing to pay a premium for a personalized consultative landscaping service.

One that asks “Is there anything else I can do for you today?” when performing

scheduled maintenance. A service in which the homeowner has the opportunity

to engage in conversation with someone on a regular basis and develop a

relationship that goes beyond their yard preferences (Dell, 2010).

Lawn care and landscaping services will benefit the community thus

concerns itself with more than just the visual or ambient enhancement of an

interior s pace, it seeks to optimize and harmonize the uses to which the interior

environment will be put. Many factors come into play in formulating the design

solution.

There are health and safety considerations, attention to special needs and

more. This study describes investment opportunity regarding setting up business

of lawn care and landscaping to provide services of said business to various level

of consumer including houses, offices, banks etc. Therein project shed light on

the key to be considered in the starting of business. The proponents aim to know

and explore the business of lawn care and landscaping services. As such there is

no specific timing required to start this business because it has no seasonal

impact. The necessary skills and knowledge in putting up this kind of business is

necessary.

Statement of the Problem

In this study the researchers aims to know and explore the business of

lawn care and landscaping services. Thus it sought to answer the following

queries;

1. What is the extent of demand in lawn care and landscaping services?

2. What is the viability of the proposed business based on the feasibility

aspects?

landscaping and gardening requirements.

3. Achieve sales and net profit in five (5) years’ time with the addition of more

employees.

Importance of the Study

The knowledge attained from this study will provide a blueprint of how to

supplement income with a landscaping business. The study will illustrate the

necessary components of a business plan and provide information to others

interested in servicing the needs of senior citizens and retirees. It may also

provoke thought creating ideas of how one can supplement their monthly income

with a small business. Thus this feasibility study would be beneficial to the

following:

Community. This study is beneficial for these set of people in

management to redesign and enhance the landscaping/lawn care to cater the

needs of the institution and its clientele. The information provided by the study is

important for them to decide and plan for the enhancement of the environment.

Retirees/Senior Citizen. They are the ultimate beneficiaries of the study.

With the good relationship to them offering the business and providing the proper

knowledge and information the services would expand.

Future Researchers. This study will provide data and information on the

aspiring researchers to do some additional research in this field of study. They

will make use of this study for research topics that would discuss appropriate

techniques, approaches, methods and strategies. This study would serve as

guide and basis in conducting further studies of similar problem.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study was aim to know and explore the business of lawn care and

landscaping services. This generates perceptions from the respondents in this

study – the senior citizen retirees of Tandag City and the neighboring town of the

area.

LITERATED REVIEW AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the review of related literature and studies from

which the present study is anchored.

Literature

Owen E. Dell (2010) is a licensed landscape architect and landscape

contractor with 39 years of industry. The author reviews accounting and explains

the difference between single-entry and double-entry systems. In a single-entry

system, you record each transaction only once. The drawback is that there’s no

way to know if you’ve made a mistake such as transposing numbers. In a double-

entry system each transaction is recorded twice, once as a debit and once as a

credit.

The debits and credits must balance, which is how you check for errors.

(Dell, 2010) then goes on to explain the difference between Cash and Accrual

accounting. Using a cash method, you enter income when it’s received and

expenses when they’re paid. In the accrual method, you record income as of the

date the transaction occurs even though you may not have received the money

yet. The same goes for expenses, even though you may not have paid them at

the time of their recording. An advantage of the accrual method is that it provides

a more accurate picture of your financial condition.

Dell (2010) often reminds the reader the number one rule to remember is

that you are in business to serve the needs of your clients. He argues that if you

do that well and keep them happy, they’ll stay with you for years, refer other

people to you, and make you successful. If you make them unhappy, they’ll go

elsewhere and tell everyone not to use you.

According to the author marketing is the art of making friends and it is

simple. Meet as many people as you can, get their attention, and make them like

you. Then tell them what you can do for them and why they should do business

with you instead of with somebody else. The objective is to make them want to

hire you and then keep them happy so they tell others experience. He explains

that the landscaping industry is split into two categories, the maintenance

gardener and the landscape contractor. The maintenance gardener is defined as

the one who is called in to care for the landscaping after it is designed and

installed. The main task of the gardener is to continually cut back plants that

have become too big for their designated spaces. The landscape contractor is a

builder who specializes in the construction of gardens and landscapes. The

scope of their trade is very wide from planting plants in private residences to

heavy construction on a commercial site. Unlike the maintenance gardener, the

landscape contractor moves from job to job and is always looking for work

(Furlong, 2007).

The author emphasizes the importance of developing a well thought out

business plan. Starting a new business without a well thought out business plan

is almost impossible. A business plan serves the entrepreneur like a map; it

provides direction and reminds the entrepreneur of what to focus on during times

of turmoil or uncertainty. Without this plan the entrepreneur can easily be led

astray exploring intermittent revenue streams, causing unnecessary strains on

precious capital and human resources (Dell, 2010).

It provides a couple practical suggestions on getting work. The first is to

find more work on existing jobs, making a habit of constantly looking around your

jobs for something else that could be improved and mentioning it to the client. His

next suggestion is talking to the neighbors. Knocking on a couple doors at

lunchtime each day, introducing yourself, explaining the benefits of the work your

doing, offer to provide an estimate and leave business card. He defines this

activity as canvassing and outlines it in four steps.

Step one, making contact with the person and making a good first

impression. Be friendly, positive, outgoing, and be yourself. Step two, qualifying

the person. This is done by avoiding unlikely homes: those that show no pride of

ownership, have no landscaping, or are occupied by renters. After you talked

with the home owner for a while you’ll be able to tell whether he or she is

interested in your services and able to pay for them. Step three is the

presentation. This is your opportunity to describe your services and how you’re

different from others in your industry. The author recommends offering a few

ideas to the homeowner about their yard to gauge interest and engagement. The

final step is the close, when you ask the homeowner for their business. The

terms “closing” or “selling” are disagreeable to many people (Dell, 2010).

Baby Boomer to be someone born during the demographic birth boom between

1946 and 1964. This group totals 78 million people, so it is useful to divide up

into two sub groups: The Younger Boomers, ages 45-54 in 2010 and the Older

Boomers, ages 55-64 in 2010. According to an unsigned study which appeared

in American (Scott, 2008), demographics (July 2002), Baby Boomers represent

42 percent of all U.S. households and control 50 percent of all consumer

spending. The article also states that Older Boomers spend 23 percent more

than the average household on hotels and vacation homes. This information

suggests that Baby Boomers spend more time away from their primary

residences than other demographic groups.

In her study Dr. Mary Furlong (2007) states that Baby Boomers enjoy

living in the suburbs. She shares with the reader that the Brookings Institute

released a report mapping aging patterns in the suburbs based on 2000 Census

data.

Accordingly, boomers accounted for 31 percent of the total suburban

population, a steady climb from 26.6 percent in 1990. The highest concentrations

of boomers are in suburban areas where housing prices have risen beyond the

budgets of most young adults. Furlong (2007) states business opportunities

abound to serve this suburban housing market including lawn and landscape

maintenance, products and services that ease the burdens of home maintenance

will be in high demand.

According to Simang (2008) a professor of Entrepreneurial Studies at East

Western University of the Philippines, 25% of new businesses will fail before the

end of their first year. The number increases to 36% and 44% for years 2 and 3.

Professor Simang (2008) cites data from a special tabulation by the Bureau of

the Census produced for the Office of Advocacy of the Agriculture for Small

Business Administration. This data illustrates the difficulty of maintaining and

growing a new business in its infancy and justifies the importance placed on

developing a good business plan.

Using the sources cited in his study, the following steps to developing a

business plan were developed. It is helpful when starting a business plan to

begin with determining a statement of purpose. A statement of purpose will focus

your mind on what you’re doing and boil it down to a simple definition that you

can use to remind yourself what your business is all about. The statement of

purpose will define the character of your business. After a purpose has been

defined the next section of a business plan should address fundamental

descriptive questions pertaining to the purposed business. This general

information section of the business plan should address what the business will

do, where it will be located, the legal form the business and its ownership

structure, the proposed start date of the business and its legal name.

Market Information should be addressed next, detailed descriptive

information about arena the purposed business will compete in. This section

should describe characteristics of prospective clients, identify the size of the

potential market, and address whether the market is growing or shrinking.

Information in this section should be specific and include statistically verifiable

facts.

Following Market Information should be a section devoted to Competition.

This section should identify how many competing companies exist in the

purposed service area, the annual sales volume of the competing companies,

and list the major services being offered. This section of business plan should

address how the purposed business intends to draw business away from

competitors and why the purposed business will be more attractive than

competitors’ to potential customers (Simang, 2008).

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the methods employed in this study which includes

the premises of the research design, research locale and respondents and data

gathering procedure.

Research Design

Based on the business, this study employed descriptive method of

research for the purpose of exploring and answering the statement of the

problem. It is the objective of the study to determine the needed steps to start a

lawn care and landscaping services business. A search was conducted for

projects that contain a combination of the following words in their title; Landscape

Maintenance, Business Plan, Landscape Management and Feasibility Study.

The method is used to describe all the information that was gathered from

the respondents of this study. Questionnaire Checklist is used in gathering data

from the respondents in interpreting and analyzing data, statistical formulas were

utilized.

Research Locale

Tandag City is located on the northeastern coast of Mindanao Island

facing the Philippine Sea. It is bounded on the north by the municipalities of

Lanuza and Cortes, on the east by the Philippine sea, on the south by the towns

of Tago and San Miguel, and on the west by the province of Agusan Del Sur. It is

located 448 nautical miles from Manila and 150 nautical miles from Cebu. The

distance from Surigao City in the north to Tandag is around 200 kilometers and

331 kilometers is the distance from Davao City in the south. Tandag has a

national secondary airport and a seaport.

Tandag has a total land area of 316 square kilometers subdivided into 21

barangays. Majority of the barangays are considered rural areas. Farming and

fishing are the main economic activity for most of the people in Tandag. Chief

farm products are rice, corn, coconut. Livestock and poultry raising are also

important sources of income.

Research Respondents

The growing aging population of retiree’s and senior citizens within

Tandag City creates a niche market for a business designed and tailored to meet

their landscaping needs. The City of Tandag area retiree and senior citizen

market has an unmet demand for personalized consultative lawn care and

landscaping services. Thus, the respondents of this study would be the 20

retirees and senior citizen in the vicinity of Tandag City.

populations of retiree, a total of twenty (20) will be the respondents of the study.

This was conducted during the School Year 2013.

Research Instrument

Reading and internet researching was the first instrument used in coming

up for the feasibility title. In addition to what others have written on how to start a

lawn care and landscaping services business, interviews were conducted with

existing landscape business owners. Prior to interview a list of interview

questions were developed to learn more about the existing local lawn care and

landscaping services. For a full list of questions, please see the Appendix A.

The knowledge gained from the interviews along with information gathered

provided the data necessary to complete the objective and answer the statement

Statistical Treatment

Data will be analyzed with the help of the statistician entered into the

SPSS Program using the percentage value. Financial analysis was conducted

with the help of the bookkeeper and an accountant hired for this study. In terms

of the demographic data of the respondents the variables will be analyzed in

connection with the data gathered.

To quantify the responses; Simple Percentage and Frequency was

LAWN CARE BUSINESS

Due to vast media exposure, over past few years, lifestyle has changed.

People are more conscious about outlook of their home. The table shows above

how interested are the retirees/senior citizen in Tandag, Industry of lawn care

and landscaping is not in the market. The basic idea is to provide professional

services with qualified staff, but it requires planning and arrangements. Firms of

interior designing and landscaping are mainly concentrating in big cities like

Manila, Cebu and Davao.

constructing new houses it is expected that demand for lawn care and

landscaping will rise ultimately.

B. SWOT Analysis

Before making any investment decision it is advisable to evaluate

associated risk factors by taking into consideration certain key elements. SWOT

analysis is a strategic planning tool used to evaluate Strengths, Weaknesses,

Opportunities and Threats involved in a project or a business venture. Strengths

and weaknesses are internal to business. Opportunities and threats originate

outside the company.

A SWOT analysis is usually performed early in the project development

process, and helps organization to evaluate internal factors.

Strengths

conditions,

 internet excess, necessary software for designing, in house infrastructure

facilities

 Difficulty in building confidence among target customers

Opportunities

 Government incentives for housing industry

 Inflow of new ideas due to open trade and globalization

 Para dime shift in lifestyle

Threats

 Tough Competition

 New entrants can easily share the business.

C. Factors Affecting the Market

The proponents use feedback from focus groups and online forums to

keep in touch with the needs of customers. The factors that affect the market in

34
Republic of the Philippines

Tandag City, Surigao del Sur
COLLEGE OF BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT

the business is the climate of ever-changing technology also affects the opinions

of consumers.

The demand for a product will be influenced by several factors:

Price

Usually viewed as the most important factor that affects demand.

Services have different sensitivity to changes in price.

Income levels

When an individual’s income goes up, their ability to think of any

renovation and services increases, and this causes demand to increase. When

incomes fall there will be a decrease in the demand.

Consumer tastes and preferences

Changing tastes and preferences can have a significant effect on demand

for different services. Persuasive advertising is designed to cause a change in

tastes and preferences and thereby create an increase in demand.

D. Competition

For a newly established firm it is imperative to face a competitive

environment in the market as competition enhances a company’s ability to strive

for continuous improvement. In the field of lawn care and landscaping services

new entity will be competing with a number of competitors.

Since the proposed business is new in Tandag City, it has no competitor.

TECHNICAL ASPECTS

This chapter tackles the aspects of services, cost of materials and labor,

estimated building cost, business location and building feasibility.

A. Services

Landscaping requires study and observation. It is not the same in different

parts of the world. Landscaping varies according to different regions. Therefore

normally local natural experts are recommended if it is done for the first time.

Understanding of the site is one of the chief essentials for successful

landscaping.

Different natural features like terrain, topography, soil qualities, prevailing

winds, depth of the frost line, and the system of native flora and fauna must be

taken into account.

In the start, the landscaping contractor makes a letter which is a rough

design and layout of what could be done with the land in order to achieve the

desired outcome. Different pencils are required to make graphics of the picture.

CAPITAL REQUIREMENTS AND STRATEGY

Working capital is how much in liquid assets that a company has on hand.

Working capital is needed to pay for planned and unexpected expenses, meet

the short-term obligations of the business, and to build the business. It is the

money you need to cover business expenses, meet short-term obligations, and

to grow your business. Start-up capital is the money you need to start a business

until it generates enough revenue to pay for itself. Start-up and working capital

can come from loans, grants, investors and partners, but many business women

use their personal financial resources to fund their businesses.

The total startup costs of the business would be Php1 million. Four

scenarios were analyzed: a best case with 30 clients, the maximum a single

landscaper is capable of servicing according to the business owners interviewed.

The second scenario based on 20 clients followed by a third scenario of 15

clients.

Lastly, an expected worst case scenario of 10 clients will be analyzed.

Fuels costs per gallon were assumed and projected consumption per visit per

client. An average revenue will be analyzed per client per visit will be assumed

based off on information from previous senior projects and interviews with

landscape maintenance business owners.

CHAPTER X

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT

Lawn Care and landscaping services can have either positive or negative

impacts on the environment, it depends on the way it is designed, implemented

and maintained. Some landscape disrupts natural environments detrimentally,

such as ripping out woods to create a more spacious lawn. Well-designed

landscape works with the natural setting of where it is located, so that it

harmoniously fits in with its surrounding. This means using native plants that

require minimal special watering or fertilizer and which do not introduce

potentially invasive vegetation or attract bugs that are dangerous to native flora

and fauna.

Using plants and materials that do not require extensive poisons to

prevent bugs or to produce falsely green lawns such as golf courses. Taking

advantage of or working with natural hills and so forth rather than flattening it. For

example, stepping hill in your back yard, use natural native stones to stabilize it

rather than some crappy phony or worse plastic stone.

Using solar lights rather than energy hogs for a variety of solar lights for

landscape, from security lights through accent lights, one of the products is an

ultrasonic pest control device. Use organic composts and much that are native to

your area.

CHAPTER XI

SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPACT

Socio-economic impact focuses on evaluating the impacts development

has on community social and economic well-being. This analysis relies on both

quantitative and qualitative measures of impacts. Development impacts are

generally evaluated in terms of changes in community demographics, housing,

employment and income, market effects, public services, and aesthetic qualities

of the community. Qualitative assessment of community perceptions about

development is an equally important measure of development impacts.

Assessing proposed developments in a socio-economic context will help

community leaders and residents identify potential social equity issues, evaluate

An opportunity exists in Tandag to start up a lawn care and landscaping

services tailored towards senior citizens. It is up to the owner how many jobs and

hours per week he/she wants to work. But a realistic goal of twenty customers in

year one, growing to 30 customers in year two, with potential to reach 45

customers in year three is attainable. The average client brings in an average of

Php 60,000 in profit per year. Tandag City has a higher percentage of senior

citizens than the other nearby places. That number is expected to grow. It is

believed that Tandag City is a popular retirement community and with the senior

citizen market is growing. An opportunity exists to offer a Lawn care and

Landscaping Services tailored towards senior citizens.

Recommendation

An opportunity exists in Tandag City for a Lawn care and Landscaping

Services tailored towards senior citizens. The number of senior citizens with

unmet landscaping needs is on the rise. A professional, punctual, reliable,

accessible, and trustworthy business owner has the opportunity to form loyal

relationships with senior citizens and offer them a service tailored towards their

needs. It is recommended that the costs and benefits of hiring additional workers

be examined in further studies. Also the number of clients a worker can service in

a week without sacrificing quality consistent standards would be useful

information for further study.
