The job of ‘sitting’

You may have heard of ‘babysitting’. It doesn’t usually mean looking after babies. Usually, the children are aged
3 to 10. Why is it called babysitting? Well, often, when you arrive at the house, the children are already in bed and
you spend a few hours sitting and watching television. In the UK, there is no law about how old babysitters must
be, but most people agree that 16 should be the youngest age. But if you aren’t over 16, you can do other ‘sitting’
jobs. Just ask people who live nearby.
One job is a pet-sitter. When people go on holiday, it can be expensive to put their pets in a special ‘hotel’.
It’s better to ask a neighbour to feed them and take them for walks if they are dogs. Then the animals can stay
at home.
If your neighbours haven’t got children or pets, they may need a plant-sitter. You go to the house regularly
and give the plants some water. Don’t forget – you won’t get any money if the plants are dead when their
owners come home!
Finally, you could be a house-sitter. House-sitters have two jobs. They go in every evening and switch on the
lights. This keeps the house safe because people think someone is living there. The second job is to clean the
house before the owners return.
The great thing is that you can do more than one job at the same time!
