The era of the Weimar republic

The uniforms of the security police 1919-1923

The new founded secrurity police (Sipo) is made up of Freikorps members, who had carried out
security duties before.

The first uniform of the Sipo is fieldgrey. Unfortunately, today, one only can say, that it did exist. The
exactly look is not recorded in any regulation of uniforms. The real uniform of the Sipo is greygreen
and it gives the name: the green police.

The Sipo-uniform is reflected by a shortage of raw materials and supply shortage. Because of that,
diverences of cutting, colour and fitting came into being.

The tunic of grey-green cloth, without pipings, normally has covered buttons. Upon the breast are two
patch pockets. Upon the front laps are two cut pockets with flaps and a button, which was first
fieldgrey, later silvery without stamping. The sleeves have rolled cuffs. The collars are varied. Both,
stand-up collar, and put-on collars are found. They can be made of tunic-cloth or trimming-cloth.

The regulations of the Kragenspiegel are imprecise. Officers up to a captain had Kragenspiegel
without embroideries, with silver-cord trimmed, or without any Kragenspiegel. From major upwards,
Kragenspiegel mit silver Kolben(?) embroideries are usual. The lower ranks wore Kragenspiegel with
big and small, white-metal-coloured arabic numbers, who suggest to detachements or groups.
Telegraph units wore lightnings, mounted troops two crossed lances and flight-squadrons propellers
upon the Kragenspiegel. I august 1920, both, the numbers and the Kragenspiegel were took off. The
special-services keep their Kragenspiegel with their insignias. In the occupied territories a numbering
continued. To wear those number upon the Kragenspiegel or the shoulder straps is rare, normally they
are worn sewed upon the upper or lower arm.

The belt is black. A clasp or a buckle are possible, also a shoulder sling can be worn.

The shoulder straps were introduced for Hilfswachtmeister assistant constable), Unterwachtmeister
(second constable) and Wachtmeister (constable) of darg-green woolen cord, passed through silvery
silk in spaces and in their centre is a ca. 2,5cm wide silvercord.

The rank differences were showed ny five-toothed stars from silvery metal. Officers up to captain
wear shoulder boards from green tunic base with two parallel silvery cords, which were led arched
around the buttonhole. These rank differences are sghown by four-toothed stars.

The trousers from grey-green tunic are without pipings. They are worn as boot-trousers to gaiters,
leather-gaiters or highg boots. As a long trousers it´s made with a Steg (?)

The cap from grey-green tunic – with dark-green trimming – doesn´t have any pipings. The visor is
black. Above the visor, in the miffle of the trimming, is the black-white prussian cocarde.

The tshako from black leather has a sun of white metal. It has ztelve sunbeams and is cut at the level
of the Augenschirmnaht (?). Upon the elevated centre is a balck painted symetrical eagle in an oak-
leave. Since 1921 the eagle flying to the left was introduced. The „storm-belt“ at the button 91 is black
with white slides. The tshako i this pattern was introduced for all ranks.
To get over bottlenecks varying tshakos were tolerated. It is possble, that officers wore a tshako with a
tunic-covered tube and polished, white metal Schuppenkette. Those tshakos don´t agree with the
regulations. The cocarde is from white metal. It consists of six roof-shaped lie on top of each other
cords. The ovale centre is black painted.

As a side-weapon the Wachtmeister and Meister wear the Seitengewehr 94/98 or 98/05, over the tunic,
pithout a Portepee. Officers, who were allowed to wear a sabre in the old army, may continue to wear,
if it is „dis-nobled“. A silver portepee belonged to this. All other officers are not allowed to wear long
side-weapons.
