ASSIGNMENT

Chapter 2 - Electrostatic potential & capacitance

Q1. What is the electrostatic potential due to an electric dipole at an equatorial

point?

Q2. What is the work done in moving a test charge q through a distance of 1 cm
along the equatorial axis of an electric dipole?

Q3. A hollow metal sphere of radius 5 cm is charged such that potential on its
surface is 10 volt. What is the potential at the center of the sphere?

Q4. Two charges, 2 µC & -2µC are placed at point A & B 5 cm apart. Draw an
equipotential surface of the system.

Q5. Derive the expression for electric potential at any point along the axial line of
an electric dipole.

Q6. Prove that energy stored in a parallel plate capacitor is half CV2.

Q7. 3 capacitors of capacitance 2pF, 3pF, 4pF are connected in parallel. What is
the total capacitance of the combination & also find charge on each capacitor if
the combination is connected to 100v supply.

Q8. The given graph shows variation of Q & V for two capacitors c1 & c2. Both
capacitors have the same plate separation but the plate area of C2 is greater
than C1. Which line corresponds to C1 and why?

Q9. A parallel plate capacitor with air between the plates has a capacitance of 8
pF. What will be capacitance if the distance between plates is reduced by half
and the space between them is filled with a substance of dielectric constant of 6.
Q10) A parallel plate capacitor charged by a battery ,when the battery
remains connected ,a dielectric slab is inserted in the space between
plates. Explain what changes, if any, occur in the values of (i) potential
difference between the plates (ii) electric field strength between the plates
(iii) capacitance (iv) charge on the plates (v) energy stored in the capacitor.
Q11) Two charges 5nC and -2nC are placed at points (5cm,0,0) and (23cm,0,0)
in a region of space where there is no other external field . Calculate the
electrostatic potential energy of this charge system.
Q12)

Two identical parallel plate capacitors c1 and c2 have capacitance c each. The
space between their plates is now filled with dielectrics as shown. If the two
capacitors still have equal capacitance, obtain the relation between dielectric
constants K,K1,K2.
Q13) Write a relation for polarization P of a dielectric material in the presence of
an external electric field E.
Q14) Find expression for capacitor with conducting slab .
Q15) Deduce an expression for the energy density of a charged capacitor.
