XII – PHYSICS ELECTROSTATIC POTENTIAL AND CAPACITANCE 20/05/24

REVISION WORKSHEET - 3
1. Derive an expression for electrostatic potential due to an electric dipole?
2. Briefly explain the principle of a capacitor? Derive an expression for the capacitance of a
parallel plate capacitor whose plates are separated by a dielectric medium? Also derive an
expression for equivalent capacitance of three capacitors, when connected in parallel and
in series.
3. Draw the equipotential surfaces corresponding to a uniform electric field in z – direction?
Also draw for two identical positive charges separated by a distance‘d’.
4. The work done in moving a charge between two points in a uniform electric field does
not depend on path? Give reasons.
5. Four charges +q, – q, + q and – q are to be arranged respectively at the four corners of a
square ABCD of side ‘a’. (i) Find the work required to put together this arrangement (ii)
A charge q0 is brought to the center of the square, the four charges being held fixed. How
much extra work is needed to do this?
6. i) A parallel plate capacitor is charged by a battery, which is then disconnected. A
dielectric slab is then inserted in the space between the plates. Explain what changes, if
any, occur in the values of
(i) capacitance. ii) potential difference between the plates. iii) electric field strength
between the plates. iv) energy stored in the capacitor
ii) A parallel plate capacitor is charged by a battery. When the battery remains connected,
a dielectric slab is then inserted in the space between the plates. (i) capacitance. ii)
potential difference between the plates. iii) electric field strength between the plates. iv)
energy stored in the capacitor.
7. i) In parallel plate capacitor, the capacitance increases from 4 f to 80 f on introducing a
dielectric medium between the plates. What is the dielectric constant of the medium?
ii) A parallel plate capacitor with air has a capacity of 8 pF. Calculate the capacity of the
capacitor if the distance between the plates is halved and the space between them is fully
filled with a substance of dielectric constant 5.
iii) An air filled parallel plate capacitor has a capacitance 1pF. The separation between the plates
is doubled and wax is inserted between the plates, then the capacitance becomes 2pF. What is the
dielectric constant of wax?
8. In the figure given below, i) Find the

equivalent capacitance of the network between points

in the network?

second case, it is filled with two slabs

constants 𝐾1 and 𝐾2, respectively as

square of side 2L (see figure). Calculate the electric potential at point A,
midway between the two charges +q and +q?

capacitor of capacitance 20pF. What will be the new potential difference across the 100pF
capacitor?

15. A 200 F parallel plate capacitor having plate separation of 5 mm is charged by a 100 V dc
