Final Project – Memory Box

Objective: Students will create a memory box containing representations of key memories
Jonas receives (or could have received) in The Giver. This project will encourage students to
think deeply about the role of memory in the novel and their own lives.

A memory box is a box containing objects that serve as a reminder. In the cases of dementia, a
memory box may be used as a form of therapy to remind the patient of their earlier life.
Memory boxes are provided by some hospitals in the event of a miscarriage to help the family
memorialize the child and help them cope with loss.

1. Memory Box Design

Students will design or decorate a physical box that represents the themes or aesthetics of The
Giver. The box could be decorated in a way that relates to The Giver. Alternatively, it can be
decorated in a way that relates to memory. Students should provide a short explanation of their
design choices.

2. Memory Artifacts (5-6 memories)

Each memory artifact should symbolize a specific memory. The memory can be from the book
or your own memory. Artifacts should be hand-crafted, constructed with repurposed materials
or upcycled from household items.

3. Memory Description Cards

For each artifact, students will create a description card, including:
Memory Title: A name that captures the essence of the memory
Memory Summary: A 4-5 sentence description from ‘The Receiver’s’ perspective as the
memory is received.
Memory Significance: An identification of a concept from the memory and an explanation how
this memory could matter to The Receiver or the community.

4. Reflection
By reflecting on the concept of memory, both through Jonas’s memories and your own, reflect
on the importance of memory, how it impacts a person’s character development, and its role in
fostering individuality.

Due date: January 8th

Recommended Timeline:
Week 1: Brainstorm ideas for memory artifacts and box designs.
Week 2: Begin creating artifacts and working on the memory descriptions.
Week 3: Finish artifacts and memory description cards. Decorate memory box.
Week 4: Finish Reflection.
