Very Short Answer Type Questions.

1. Why do different people have different development goals?
Ans. Different people have different development goals because people have diverse wishes,
likes and dislikes and aspirations.
.
2. Mention any one limitation of per capita income as an indicator of development.
Ans. Per capita income does not tell us anything about the distribution of income. A poor country
with a more equal distribution of income would be better than a richer country with unequal
distribution of income. (Or any other limitation)

3. Besides the size of per capita income, which other property of income is important in
comparing two or more countries?
Ans. Per capita income is an important but not the only criterion for development. Along with
average income, equitable distribution of income in a country should also be considered.

2
4. Suppose there are four families in your locality, the average per capita income of whom is
10,000. If the income of three families is 6,000; 8,000 and 14,000 respectively, what would be
the income of the fourth family?
Ans. Suppose the income of fourth family is x, therefore
10000 = x+6000+8000+14000
4
10000 = x+28000
4
x + 28000 = 40000
x = Rs. 12,000

5. Why is the issue of sustainability important for development?

Ans. The issue of sustainability is important for development because development must be in
tandem with the future. If natural resources are not sustained, then development will stagnate
after a point of time. Exploiting resources unethically will ultimately undo the development that
a country may have achieved. This is because in the future, those resources will not be available
for further progress.

Short Answer Type Questions.

1. “Money cannot buy all the goods and services that one needs to live well” Do you agree with
this statement? Justify your answer with any three suitable arguments.
Ans. Yes, I agree with the statement because money income and material goods alone are not an
adequate indicator of a good quality of life. Money cannot buy all the goods and services one
needs to live well.
• Money cannot buy a pollution free and dean environment with fresh air.
• It cannot protect us from infectious diseases and guarantee good health for us.
• Money cannot assure that medicines available in the market are not adulterated.
To live well one needs non-material factors such as equal treatment, freedom, security,
equal opportunity to learn, a pollution free environment, good and safe working conditions
etc.

2. “The Earth has enough resources to meet the needs of all but not enough to satisfy the greed of
even one person”. How is this statement relevant to the discussion of development? Discuss.
Ans. The Earth has enough resources to meet the needs of all but not enough to satisfy the greed
of even one person”. This statement is relevant to the discussion of development as both
resources and development go hand in hand. For the sustainability of development, the
maintenance of resources is very crucial. Needs can be fulfilled whereas greed can never be
satisfied because greed increases with every want to be fulfilled. As the statement claims, the
Earth has enough resources- renewable as well as non-renewable to satisfy everyone’s needs;
however, these need to be used with a view to keep the environment protected so that a balance
of production and use is maintained and shortages are avoided.

3. Does availability of good health and educational facilities depend only on amount of money
spent by the government on these facilities? What other factors could be relevant?
3
Ans. No, the availability of good health and educational facilities do not depend only on amount
of money spent by the government. Other relevant factors can be availability of qualified
doctors, medical facilities like hospitals, medicines, etc. In the case of educational facilities,
well-qualified teachers, enough schools, net attendance ratio, etc are also required.

4. ‘Consequences of environmental degradation do not respect national or state boundaries.’

Justify the given statement.
Ans. Environment is degraded through the depletion of resources like air, water and soil. It leads
to the destruction of the ecosystem and extinction of wildlife. It is now a global issue and has
been debated over decades.
(1) Pollution in one country may affect the other in the form of acid rains, climate change,
etc.
(2) Deforestation in some countries may disturb the rainfall pattern in the surrounding
countries.
(3) Land degradation and dam burst can bring massive siltation and flood like situation.

5. “People have conflicting development goals”. Support the statement with suitable example.
Ans. It is true to say that people have conflicting developmental goals. What may be the
development for one may not be for the other. Different people have different interests, life
situations and state of mind. They visualize things, actions, etc. according to their level of
understanding.
For example, the construction of a flyover to reduce the congestion and traffic jams may be a
development goal especially for the daily commuters. But for the construction of the flyover,
surrounding houses, shops, etc. need to be demolished which may not be like by the occupants of
these shops and houses. This may not be a development goal for them.

Answer the following questions in brief.

1.Explain with the help of five examples, how development could mean different things to
different people.
(HOMEWORK)

2. What is meant by sustainable development? Explain it by taking the case study of water.
Ans. Development i.e. progress does not only mean securing a better present, but it also means
securing a better future for the coming generations. Sustainable development means development
should take place without undue draining of resources, and development in the present should
not compromise with the needs of the future generations.
Thus, the issue of sustainability is important for development because if natural resources are not
sustained, then development will be hindered and will stop after some time. This also compels us
to think that we should minimize our needs as far as possible so that future generations may not
face crisis of anything.
Explanation: For example, groundwater is a renewable resource. These resources are replenished
by nature. But if we use it more than what is being replenished by rain then we would be
overusing this resource. We must use water in such a way that people of future generations may
also be able to use this resource.

4
We should not overuse and degrade the quality of groundwater for selfish purposes. If we don’t
take responsibility people of coming generations will curse us. Hence, we should value its
sustainability.
