Course Outline 2025

UNIVERSITY OF ZIMABWE
DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING

MICROWAVE ENGINEERING
EENG 404
LECTURER: Eng G. Munetsi
Email: [email protected]

Purpose of the Course:

The students in this course will gain fundamental understanding of the basics of
microwaves, microwave components and circuits in terms of scattering parameters,
electrical characteristics of waveguides and transmission lines through electromagnetic field
analysis, designing of various types of microwaves guiding structures, wave generation and
propagation through various types of media, power dividers, directional couplers and
measurement of these devices.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1. To analyse Waveguides in Rectangular Coordinate Systems.

2. To Use S-parameter terminology to describe circuits.
3. To explain how microwave devices and circuits are characterized in terms of their “S”
Parameters.
4. To Use microwave components such as isolators, Couplers, Circulators, Tees, Gyrators etc.
5. To give students an understanding of basic microwave devices (both amplifiers and
oscillators).
6. To expose the students to the basic methods of microwave measurements.

COURSE OUTCOMES
By the end of the semester, the student will demonstrate the ability to:
• Have a solid understanding of basic electromagnetic theory.
• Understand the basic principles of transmission lines and analyse them analytically
and numerically.
• Understand the significance of microwaves and their propagation
• Understand the basic principles of waveguides
• Understand the basic principles of microwave devices.
• Understand how microwave devices contribute to communications.
