Project PPT 03032020

This project aims to analyze the rheological properties of an eco-friendly lubricant made from coconut oil, titanium dioxide nanoparticles, and oleic acid as a surfactant. The document provides background on using nanoparticles like TiO2 in lubricating oils and discusses coconut oil as a sustainable alternative to mineral oils. It outlines the objectives to develop a green lubricant using vegetable oil, nanoparticles, and a surfactant. The methodology describes taking coconut oil, adding 0.05%, 0.1%, and 0.2% TiO2, and using sonication to mix in oleic acid as a surfactant. The references cited research on improving tribological properties of oils with nanoparticles and developing biodegradable lubricants

Introduction

 Nanoparticles have been used as

lubricant oil additives in recent years.
Between various inorganic
nanoparticles which are used as
lubricant oil additives, TiO2
nanoparticles have shown so
important effects to improve the
tribological properties. Addition of
solid particles in coconut oil can
reduce friction.

Selection of material

After doing literature survey we are choosing following vegetable oils:

1. Coconut oil – 1.5 litre

Comparison of coconut oil with engine oil SAE20W40:

Compared to mineral SAE 20W40, coconut oils in general

possess high flash point, high viscosity index, high lubricity, low
evaporative loss, are renewable, and are environmentally
friendly. Poor oxidative and hydrolytic stability, high cost, food
versus energy debate, high temperature sensitivity of
tribological behaviour and poor cold flow properties are
reckoned to be the limitations of vegetable oils for their use as
base oils for industrial lubricants.
2. TiO2 -20gm

Properties of TiO2:
 Non-toxic, inexpensive, high photoactive, and
easily synthesised and handled.
 High electrochemical properties and high chemical
stability.
 Wide band gap and high dielectric constant and
hardness.

3. Surfactant (500 ml):

We will used oleic acid as a surfactant and mixed
20% oleic acid in each sample to lower the surface
tension nanofluid.
Methodology

 We will take coconut oil as a lubricant and titanium

oxide (TiO2) as nanoparticle and oleic acid as a
surfactant. Because this mixture is cost effective.
  We will be performing this in sonication.

 Make The Samples

(1) 0.05% TiO2 + 50ml of coconut oil
(2) 0.1% TiO2 + 50ml of coconut oil
(3) 0.2% TiO2 + 50ml of coconut oil
