IMPLICIT AND
EXPLICIT SIGNALS
Verbal and Non-verbal Comunication
Implicit vs. Explicit – How to Use Each Correctly
• Implicit and explicit are both adjectives that
share the same ending. However, they have
opposite meanings. This can make the two words
confusing.
• Implicit means not stated directly but implied or
hinted at.
• She didn’t say she would kill me exactly, but she
did say, “It would be a shame if something
happened to you,” in a menacing way.
Implicit vs. Explicit – How to Use Each Correctly
• Explicit means stated directly. In other words,
something explicit is very clear and exact about
the meaning.
• I don’t have a feeling that he will fire a lot of
employees. I know it for certain. I know because
he explicitly said that he would during the last
meeting. (explicitly is the adverb form of the word)
• Now, let’s go over the specific ways each of these
words are used.
When to use implicit: Implicit is an adjective
that describes some information that a person
hints at but doesn’t say directly.
For example,
· There was no rule in the student handbook
Using against boys wearing skirts, but there was still
an implicit understanding amongst the students
Implicit in a that the school administration wouldn’t accept it.
Sentence · The parent told the child, “Stop. Or else.”
Although the parent didn’t directly say what the
punishment would be, the child understood the
implicit meaning that the punishment would be
severe.
Implicit comes from the same Latin verb as the
word implicate.
Using Explicit in a Sentence
When to use explicit: Explicit is an
adjective that des\cribes information that is
stated directly and clearly, without any question
about the meaning.
Using For example:
Explicit in I’m not guessing that my grandfather is racist.
I know he is because he said that he was. It
a Sentence was very explicit.
You absolutely can’t drink any alcohol at
all while you’re driving! That’s not a suggestion;
that’s an explicit law!
Explicit comes from the same Latin verb as
the word explain.

RECALLING
VERBAL AND
NON-VERBAL
Verbal Communication
• Verbal communication is more than the words that
are said.
• Verbal signals are received in different ways
depending on tone, stress, and voice inflection.
• Vocal tone is used to convey the emotions of the
speaker but can often be misinterpreted. People with
loud voices and direct language are often perceived
as having a negative tone that was not intended. For
example, Sarah may misread that Christopher is angry
with her because Christopher has a loud voice.
Vocal Stress
• Vocal stress emphasizes a word or words in a sentence
to express meaning.
• For example, 'I did not tell you to complete the written
portion of the assignment,' with the emphasis on the word
'I' is perceived differently from saying, 'I did not tell you
to complete the written portion of the assignment,' with
the emphasis on the word 'written.'
• In the first sentence, it sounds like the speaker is
defending that the message did not come from him, while
the second sentence sounds like the speaker asked the
listener to complete a different part of the assignment.
Vocal Inflection
• Vocal inflection is a change of pitch or tone to
express meaning.
• For example, if someone asks a question and you
say, 'no,' with a downward inflection, it sounds
commanding. However, if you say, 'no' with an
upward inflection, it sounds as if you're asking a
question and may inspire debate.
Non-verbal Communication
• Nonverbal communication conveys much more
meaning than verbal language.
• At times, the message is confused by the recipient,
so it's smart to be mindful of how nonverbal
language will be perceived.
• Some nonverbal forms of communication include
body language, eye contact, facial expressions,
and gestures. Personal space can also convey
meaning either intentionally or unintentionally.
Group Activity
• List as many non-verbal communication as
you can think of.
• Write it on a bond paper.
• Then, explain it one by one.
