Beats Electronics

See All Stories

Beats Electronics was created in 2006 by Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine. They focused on premium speakers and headphones. In 2011, it was estimated they had over 60% of the $100+ speaker market. On August 1, 2014, Apple acquired the company for $3 billion in cash and stock. It was the largest acquisition in Apple’s history.

After being acquired by Apple, Beats Music (a Spotify competitor) was shut down and many of its features found their way into Apple Music. Apple continues to release products under the brand today.

This Beats cable is the official Apple solution for using CarPlay with USB-C iPhones

When Apple moved the iPhone to USB-C with the iPhone 15, it left behind more than just the Lightning port. While each new iPhone comes with a USB-C charging cable, many cars still use USB-A ports to enable wired CarPlay. That’s created an annoying gap for drivers: no first-party cable to connect a USB-C iPhone to a USB-A car.

Apple’s workaround? A $29 USB-C to Lightning adapter. More recently, Beats has stepped in with the cable Apple never made. And since Beats is an Apple brand, this USB-A to USB-C cable is effectively the official solution for using CarPlay with USB-C iPhones.

Apple is doing something very fascinating with its Beats brand

Apple acquired Beats back in 2014, and it’s certainly been interesting to watch Apple’s varying decisions over the years. For the most part, the Beats brand has stayed completely intact. Beats Music was replaced with Apple Music, and the Beats 1 radio station on Apple Music was subsequently rebranded.

Obviously, Apple has continued to release new Beats headphones over the years. More recently, though, Apple has begun to do something very fascinating. It’s now positioning Beats as an accessory brand.

Updating AirPods firmware should be as easy as updating Beats devices on Android

Apple on Wednesday released a firmware update for the Beats Studio Pro headphones, introduced last year, with audio sharing. Of course, many users want to try out the new feature as soon as possible, but updating the firmware of Beats headphones or even AirPods from an iOS device is something really obscure. On Android, on the other hand, this process is much easier.
