Unit Title: Technology Integration in the 21st Century Subject: Professional Learning Duration of Unit: Approximately one hour

STAGE 1 DESIRED RESULTS


Established Goals: 1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments. a. Promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness b. Engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources c. Promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes d. Model collaborative knowledge 2. Design and Develop Digital Age Learning Experiences and Assessments Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessment incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETSS. a. Design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity b. Customize and personalize learning activities to address students diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources 3. Model Digital Age Work and Learning Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society. c. Communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital age media and formats d. Model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support research and learning 4. Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices. 1. STAGE 2 ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE


Performance Task(s): Educator will be able to access various Web 2.0 Tools and choose one to use. Educator will reflect on use and collaborate, using the website blog. Other Evidence: Ability to use and explain the benefits of a new technology tool in class curriculum. Reflection of use and collaboration via the web blog. Ability to create/start a professional network.

STAGE 3 LEARNING ACTIVITIES


Learning Activities: Meeting One 1. Have all educators sign in and provide an email address. 2. Begin class by asking the following questions, How has technology changed the way we learn information? What new skills do you think students need because of technology? (Discuss information overload and how information is now at their fingertips. Also discuss how this creates a need for evaluative skills and a knowledge of and appreciaction of copyright laws.) 3. Show YouTube video entitled, Teaching in the 21st Century from the unit website (www.technologyint.weebly.com ) 4. Allow for discussion and reflection of video. 5. Show and discuss what Web 2.0 means. Show definition page from http://www.livebinders.com/play/play?id=20761 6. Show student examples of students integrating technology (using link from livebinders) 7. Discuss how these tools can be used as differentiation strategies and also as a way to give students creative outlets to share learning, rather than always writing a paper or questions and answers. Show Digital Blooms Taxonomy and how some of the student examples fit within the different, higher-order levels such as evaluating and creating. 8. Show links to various Web 2.0 tools and allow educators to choose one tool in which they would like to use. Show how many tools provide tutorials on their sites but if not, a simple search on Google or YouTube can lend help. 9. Discuss tools selected and implementations. Allow a few educators to share their experiences and discuss with the class if time permits. 10. Demonstrate use of social networking tools to stay updated professionally such as twitter, facebook, delicious, netvibes, etc 11. Allow educators to set up their own professional learning network (at school if not blocked). 12. Allow for feedback with self-assessment rubric. 13. Follow-up via email.
