Control Systems and Automatic Control

Control systems engineering requires an understanding of instrumentation and automatic control of dynamic processes. It involves applying knowledge to plan, design, develop, operate, and evaluate control systems to ensure safety and operability. Modern engineering systems integrate technologies like mechanical, chemical, software, materials and electrical engineering to control operations. Systems and control engineers are trained to integrate efforts across engineering fields to optimize system performance. Control technology is used in various areas like space travel, buildings, vehicles, telecommunications, manufacturing plants, and human physiology. It has revolutionized with computers and new intelligent applications. Control engineers use cross-disciplinary knowledge to design and maintain complex systems.

Control systems and Automatic Control

The ability to apply knoledge

Control systems engineering is a
branch of professional engineering.
It requires an understanding of the science of
instrumentation and the automatic control of
dynamic processes.
The ability to apply this knowledge to the
planning, design, development, operation, and
evaluation of control systems to ensure the
safety and practical operability of such
processes is very important .
Modern engineering systems employ a broad
spectrum of technologies, which when
integrated provide for improved efficiency,
quality and reliability.
Integration of mechanical, chemical, software,
materials and electrical engineering make
systems that control and operate technologies.

Systems and Control Engineers are trained in

the skills and tools that bring together the
efforts of several engineering fields, to make
things work efficiently and well - to make
things happen!

Systems and Control Engineers

Some examples where automatic

control technology is used are space travel,
skyscrapers in order to reduce the sway-tion,
or for climate control in buildings and
vehicles.
Control is also used in telecommunications to
create interference broadcasting and in a
processing plant, there may be thousands of
control loops for controlling pressure,
temperature, flow, etc.
Many systems in the human body can also be
described in terms of control engineering,
such as regulation of body temperature and
light control in the eye.
The use of computers has revolutionized
automatic control technology, and there is a
constantly evolving with new applications in
all possible areas.
The subject has also been a renaissance in
intelligent functions are introduced in different
types of embedded systems.

Systems and Control Engineers often

serve as the technical managers and leaders in
interdisciplinary projects.
Control engineers use a base of knowledge in
materials, mechanics, physics and chemistry
to make things work.
Robots, cars, airplane engines, submarines,
and assembly lines all need a control engineer
to design and maintain them.
Systems and Control Engineers are the people
who analyze, optimize, control, and design
complex systems that are all around us.
In complicated devices, such as automobile
anti-lock braking systems, aircraft flight
controllers, robotic manufacturing assembly
lines, rate-adaptive pacemakers, computer
communication systems, and advanced
petrochemical refineries, the skills and talents
of mechanical engineers, electrical engineers,
chemical engineers, metallurgists, and
computer engineers are often required.
But it is the systems and control engineers
who study the integration and coordination of
all of the component subsystems.

Impact of Control Technology

Control technology has had significant
impact in manufacturing and mining (robots),
automobile systems (cruise control, power
train management), cameras (auto focus, smile
detection), health care, communications, and
many other products and systems that enhance
welfare and enable human aspirations.
