Key Concepts

 Opinion-Marking Signals
 Opinion-marking signals, usually found in the beginning of a sentence, and is used in
introducing your personal point of view, in a specific time with your own perspective and
style about a topic that will complement the sentence.

 List of opinion-marking signals

1. Expressing Personal Opinion

 I believe that
 I’d like to point out that

Examples:

I think the library should be open longer.(Then provide reasons and evidence to support
your opinion).
Sample Reason: It closes at 8pm and I usually study until 10pm which means I have to
find a new place to go.

2. Expressing General Opinion


To express general point of view starts with:
 Some people say that
 It is generally accepted
 That
 Many people say that

Examples:

Many people say that he is a bad leader.(Then provide reasons and evidence to support
your opinion).
Sample Reason: He had made our relationship worse and not better.

3. Responding To Opinion
In responding to an opinion you can agree or disagree.

Agreeing to an opinion

 Of course
 You’re absolutely right
 Yes, I agree
 That’s a good point
 Exactly!
 That’s true!
 I’d go along with that

Examples:

a.) Yes, I agree that she is beautiful.


b.) Of course she is!
c.) You’re absolutely right that she is beautiful.

Disagreeing to an opinion

 I don’t agree with you


 I’m sorry to disagree with you
 but
 Yes, but don’t you think
 I’m not sure about that
 That’s not the same thing

Examples:
a.) I’m sorry to disagree with you but I don’t think that’s the right thing to do.
b.) That’s not the same thing I have seen on television.

 In expressing you opinion you can also write an opinion essay. In writing yourpersuasive
essay, you may use the following structure.

 Paragraph 1 – INTRODUCTION
-State your main idea or the point that you are trying to prove and give two
reasons for your taking this stand.

 Paragraph 2 and 3 – BODY


-explain in detail the reasons you have stated in your first paragraph.
Develop a paragraph for each reason you have cited.

 Paragraph 4 – CONCLUSION
-Sum up your position by restating your main idea and finishing with a
“call of action.”
