Concepts: Recognize the different American Indian tribes in Idaho, by analyzing the
similarities and differences.
Objectives:
Students will be able to:
Identify each American Indian tribe in Idaho
Analyze the similarities and differences of each tribe
Advance Preparation:
Teacher will have made copies for each student to have an article
Assessment:
Students will complete a venn diagram by providing three differences and similarities between
two of the five tribes they choose. Students will write an opinion paragraph about one specific
American tribe out of the two from their venn diagram.
Lesson Plan Layout
Teacher:
As a whole group teacher will ask students if they can name and identify the five main
American Indian Idaho tribes. Students will be asked if they can identify anything about
these tribes.
Teacher will ask students to get into groups of five. Each group will be given five
different articles, each focusing on a different Idaho tribe. Teacher will ask students to
quietly read one article before sharing information with their group.
Once all students are done we will discuss some key points that each student will need
to share to their group. Students will then share a few main points from their article.
Teacher questions:
1. Where is your tribe located?
2. Describe the clothing of your tribe.
3. What did the Idaho American tribe live in?
Students:
1. Students will answer with the location of their specific tribe. Answers will include:
Great Basin, Great Plains, Northern Plateau
2. Students will give various answers such as: dresses, leggings, moccasins, fur, animal
hide, robes and more.
3. Students will share how the tribes lived. Answers will include pit houses, te pee, tule-
mat lodge, wikiups and huts.
Students:
After discussion, students will pair up with a partner of different tribe. Together students
will complete a venn diagram of three similarities and three difference between their two
tribes.
Teacher:
An extension to this activity would be to have students write an opinion paragraph
focusing on something they found fascinating or which tribe they would want to be a
part of and why.
