Question 1: What is an Infrastructure?

Answer:

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, Infrastructures are the basic systems and services, such
as transportation and power supplies, that a country or organization uses in order to work effectively.
Basically, these physical man-made structures which architects & engineers are continually building is
for the gain of not only of its respective owners but also for the betterment of the country.

An article written by Jeffrey E. Fulmer cites a comprehensive defintion of the term,

“Infrastructure assets are the physical structures, facilities, and networks that provide essential services
to the public. These assets include transportation structures (roads, bridges, tunnels, railways, airports,
and seaports), energy and utility companies, communication entities, and social services such as
educational facilities and hospitals.” (Chambers, 2007).

Fulmer concluded that Infrastructure can then be more concisely defined as “The physical
components of interrelated systems providing commodities and services essential to enable, sustain, or
enhance societal living conditions (Fulmer, 2009).

Question 2: What are the types of Infrastructure Construction Projects?

Answer:

1. Aviation Infrastructures - projects develop and maintain airplanes and airports.

2. Bridge Infrastructures - construction oversees the costs of building and maintaining bridges
throughout the country. This includes heavily-trafficked highway bridges that are accessed daily.
3. Communication Infrastructures - The communications infrastructure sector focuses on the
connection between government agencies, businesses, and the nation through wireless, cable,
satellite and other technologies.
4. Power & Energy Infrastructures - The electrical infrastructure oversees projects that deal with
power including; electrical lines, power grids, and innovations in alternative energy.
5. Railroad Infrastructures - is on the pulse of the United States transportation system. The sector is
responsible for innovating and safeguarding trains, subways, and light rail systems. This includes track
layout, steel supplies, bridges and tunnels.
6. Road Infrastructures - construction builds new streets and fixes streets, roads, and highway
systems for mass transit. It also oversees developing transportation projects that grant greater
transportation access to communities.
7. Water Infrastructures - works to create sustainable water projects to purify water supplies from
waste, and make it safe for drinking.
8. Waste Management - Construction waste management works to improve the environment by
storing, treating and eliminating hazardous materials. Sustainable construction practices are used to
safely reprocess water for drinking, enhance human health, and dispose of sewage and solid waste.
9. Hazardous Waste Management - Hazardous waste construction finds and disposes of hazardous
materials to protect the environment. Solid and hazardous waste bi-products, such as sewage
remnants and other industrial leftovers, are transported to designated landfills hazardous waste
facilities. Tanks, drip pads and incinerators are used to treat, recycle or dispose of.

Question 3: What are the roles of Civil Engineers in Infrastructure Development?

Answer:

Engineers play import role in infrastructural development of any nation. Engineers always
ensure that they find solution to any problem at hand by applying knowledge and the experience they
have gathered to solve the problem and to build projects that will benefit human beings (Olajuyin,
2018). Civil Engineering involved in construction, planning, designing and maintenance of structures and
it can also altar the geography to favor the needs of human beings. They also specialize in building high
ways. All these bridges fly over and motor able roads around us are the product of the discipline
(Olajuyin, 2018).

Infrastructure Facilities Include:

1. Good surface communication links such as tar or concrete rods.

2. Provision of water supply distribution system i.e. construction of water storage reservation
or sumps, laying of underground pipes etc.
3. Provision of a drainage system which may include construction of surface drains as
subsurface drains for the disposal of wastewater.
4. Supply of electrical power for which construction of transmission line towers, construction
of electrical substations.
5. Providing inland communications lines, i.e telephone lines etc.
6. Construction of recreational places e.g gardens, parks etc.

Question 4: Give examples of notable Infrastructure Projects/Developments in the Philippines.

Answer:

1. San Juanico Bridge (Western Samar and Northern Leyte Provinces)

Contract Value : Php 85,000,000.00
Completion Date: July 3, 1974

Strecthing 2.16 km., this is the country's longest steel bridge at that time. Concrete approach
roads total 7.62 km. onboth ends of the bridge. The bridge has abutments founded on steel H-piles.
Piers are rock seated pedestals built by the "Prepakt" method, having single cylindrical shafts and
tapered cantilivered copings.

2. The Philippine Arena (Ciudad de Victoria, Bocaue, Bulacan)

Contract Value: Php 10,668,105,000.00

3. It has a unique layout compared to other indoor arenas in the country.
4. World-class, foreign-based companies designed and built the arena.
5. It is made ready for any potential disasters.
6. Some Philippine symbols inspire the design of the arena.
7. Construction of the Philippine Arena lasted 30 months.
