LTE Call Flow!

1. The document outlines the key steps in an LTE call flow, beginning with UE initialization and frequency acquisition and ending with the attachment procedure being completed. 2. Key steps include the UE detecting PSS/SSS signals to identify the cell, decoding system information, selecting a PLMN, performing random access and establishing an RRC connection, authenticating with the network, and setting up default EPS bearers to activate the PDN connection. 3. Security mechanisms like NAS security mode command are also part of the call flow to securely configure the connection before transferring user data.

LTE Call Flow

LTE Call Flow

→ UE Switched on

→ UE Protocol Stack initialization

→ Frequency Acquisition

→ RSSI Scan (RSSI Scan are two type SLS Storage List Search and DBS deviated Band search)

→ UE figure out all channels which is show RSSI value >threshold (Threshold also upto chipset
implementation)

→ UE Detect PSS SSS RS and get PCI value

→ UE decode System info MIB by PBCH (Channel Bandwidth SFN & PHICH)

→ SIB 1 read request get PCFICH & PDCCH & PDSCH

→ UE start PLMN decoding UE get PLMN by SIB1 which is broadcast by EnodeB

→ Based on USIM info UE starts to camp on candidate cell & try decoding system Information

→ Proceed to registration process

LTE Call Flow
→ UE triggered RRC then start RACH procedure (RRC connection request goes by RACH)
• RRC Purpose to create SRB1(Signaling radio bearer 1)
• Channel- UL CCCH
• UE Identity here is some random number this random number used for contention resolution during random Access
procedure
• Establishment cause (Like MO Signaling used for attach detach & tracking area update)

→ UE received RRC connection Setup by EnodeB

• During RRC connection setup EnodeB first setup SRB 1 for this UE & UE also Setup SRB1
• Channel- DL-SCH –to setup SRB1 Contain mgs- SRB identity
• DL-CCCH
• RLC ACK mode
• Logical channel priority1
• RRC connection setup you can see all MAC layer parameters)
• Physical layers parameters (Like Transmission mode

→ UE send RRC connection Setup complete to EnodeB on SRB1

• Now This point SRB1 setup Successfully
• UE send attach request messages to MME via EnodeB
• These all messages is AS but When UE sends Setup complete mgs to EnodeB piggybacked attach request or PDN
connectivity request also)
• Attach request msg. (Attach type combined EPS or IMSI attach or EPS attach only also, GUTI, Security algorithm's
supported by UE, UE last tracking area & location area)
• Initial UE mgs S1AP interface
LTE Call Flow
→ EMM identity request
• Network request to UE send IMSI

→ EMM identity response

• UE send IMSI to network

→ Authentication request (MME to UE via EnodeB)

• Downlink NAS msg. purpose to check whether UE and network are legitimate or not In LTE UE and network both
authenticate each other, MME send Authentication info req. to HSS and MME received Authentication info from HSS
KASME RAND AUTN XRES all these parameters used during authentication process

→ Authentication Response(UE to MME via EnodeB)

• UE check AUTN UE does & check AUTN is ok if AUTN is valid then network is authentic
• UE calculate RES send this RES with Authentication Response mgs.

→ EMM security mode command

• Downlink NAS and downlink info transfer to configure NAS layer security(Integrity and ciphering)

→ EMM security mode complete

• Uplink NAS to confirm security algorithm and security context has been successfully implemented
LTE Call Flow

→ ESM information request – Session Related information

• ESM information (APN & protocol configuration option)

UE to MME ------------------------

Create Session ----------------M M E to SGW to PGW------------\

Create session response – PGW to SGW to MME-----------------(APN Setting IP QOS Priority , DRB-5 Default bearer)

→ ESM information response

• UE send ESM information such as APN protocol configuration option to MME

→ UE capability enquiry (MME to UE via EnodeB)

• To initial context setup request attach from EnodeB to UE- This mgs is sent only when EnodeB does not receive UE
capabilities from MME

→ UE capability information
• UE sent to EnodeB and EnodeB send same to MME

→ Security mode command EnodeB to UE

• To create secure environment before sending Access stratum data such as SRB2 configuration DRB configuration etc.
EnodeB selected ciphering and security algorithm as per UE capabilities

→ security mode complete

LTE Call Flow
→ EnodeB send RRC connection reconfiguration to UE by NAS
• Purpose of this to setup SRB2
• To setup DRB5- DRB 5 is used to transfer user data to network and To send attach accept to UE ,
• To send “Activate default EPS bearer context request” msg. to UE this mgs has all the parameters related to data flow
such as full APN name IP address allocated by PDN gateway , Priority of air interface and QOS

→ RRC reconfiguration complete

• Initial context response

→ Attach compete

→ M easurement control
