Paragraph – A series of sentences that are organized and coherent, and

are all related to a single topic. Their purpose is to describe, inform,
give an opinion, state facts or explain. It should have at least 5
sentences.

TYPES OF PARAGRAPHS
1. DESCRIPTIVE - Describes how a person/thing looks or feels. The
writer can describe people, places, objects or events.
Example paragraph:
The movie theatre is an exciting place where people can relax and
enjoy the experience. The warm scent of popcorn emanates throughout the
cinema and a waft of chocolate delights the air. As the movie begins, the
soft cushions allow tired bodies to sink in a rest. Everyone’s minds are
taken to a miniature vacation as they watch the movie before them. The
cinema is an extraordinary place to spend down-time.

2. NARRATIVE - Tells stories or sequence of events in chronological

order.
Example paragraph:

I’ll never forget the first time I got lost in La Paz City. I was travelling
with my parents during summer vacation. We were in a department store,
and I was so excited to see such a huge place. Suddenly, I turned around
to ask my mom something, but she was gone! I began crying and
screaming at the top of my lungs. Two minutes later, my mom and dad
came running toward me. We all cried and hugged each other. I’ll never
forget that day as long as I live.

3. EXPOSITORY - To explain something, give information or instructions.

Example paragraph:
Canada is one of the best countries in the world to live in. First,
Canada has an excellent health care system. Second, Canada has a high
standard of education. Finally, Canada’s cities are clean and efficiently
managed. Canadian cities have many parks and lots of space for people to
live. As a result, Canada is a desirable place to live.
4. PERSUASIVE - To convince the reader.
Television has become an important means of entertainment
worldwide. People, young and old, watch television. But we should not
watch too much television because many of the programs shown are not
educational. Besides, it has a negative impact on a person’s mental
development. Secondly, people should not spend too much time watching
television because they miss other activities that are more beneficial.
Exercise, reading, spending time with family and friends are more rewarding
to our mental health and physical well-being. Therefore, people should not
spend valuable time watching too much television. Instead, we should use it
wisely – to enhance our knowledge and learn more about the wonderful
world that we live in.

Basic Parts of a Paragraph

1. Topic Sentence – The topic sentence is usually the first sentence in a

paragraph. Also called the Controlling Idea of a paragraph
because it serves as a guide for the writer to keep his
or her writing under control.

2. Supporting Sentences – Serves as the body of a paragraph. This is

where the writer elaborates the topic by including specific
details or evidence. All of the sentence in the body must relate
to the topic sentence. These sentences should be organized
accordingly through the use of transitional devices.
3. Concluding Sentences – It is the final sentence of a paragraph. The
concluding sentence restates the main idea from the topic
sentence. It comes after all the details have been
included in the body of the paragraph.

Transitional Devices used in concluding sentences:

CONCLUSION: thus, indeed, hence, finally, therefore, consequently,

in conclusion, to conclude, as a result, in the end, and for all these
reasons.

SUMMARY: so, accordingly, briefly, in sum, summing up, in summary,

to sum up, as can be seen, given the point, and to summarize

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF EFFECTIVE PARAGRAPH

a. Clear Topic Sentence – It is the most important sentence in a
paragraph that provides a general summary of the paragraph.

b. Unity – All sentences in the paragraph talk about one central idea.
The writer will deal only with one topic.

c. Coherence – Refers to the connection of ideas in the paragraph in

general. The idea in the topic sentence, as well as the supporting
sentences and concluding sentence, is connected to each other
through the use of transitional devices.

d. Good Paragraph Development – Refers to the principle when a

paragraph describes, elaborates, explains, and supports its topic
sentence. A paragraph is considered adequately developed
if after reading it, the reader is left with no questions.

E. Application

 The teacher will divide the class into 2 groups.

 Each group is tasked to compose a 5-sentence paragraph of their
chosen topic.
 Each group will be given a burger graphic organizer to write down
their composed paragraph.
 The allotted time for the activity is 5 minutes.
 After 5 minutes, each group will choose a representative to present
their output.

RUBRICS:
 The teacher will provide 4 Facebook Emojis to be given to each
group.
 Each group will critic and rate the paragraph written by the other
group by showing their Facebook Emoji reactions.
 Each reaction has corresponding points.

HEART EMOJI (20 pts) – The paragraph has complete parts, has clear
topic sentence, unity, coherence, and adequate development
and is written in an organized way.
WOW EMOJI (15 pts) – The paragraph has complete parts, has clear
topic sentence, unity, coherence, and adequate development but
not properly organized.
CARE EMOJI (10 pts) - The paragraph presents the essential parts but is
poorly organized and poorly shows clear topic sentence, unity,
coherence and development
LIKE EMOJI (5 pts) – The paragraph does not contain the 3 parts of
paragraph and does not show clear topic sentence, unity,
coherence and development
F. Generalization

The teacher will ask the students the following:

 What is a paragraph?
 What are the basic parts of a paragraph?
 How can we write an effective paragraph?
 How important is writing a paragraph to you?
 Do you think you can convey a message properly if you do not
know how to construct a good and effective paragraph?

IV. EVALUATION

Direction: Using the activity sheets provided, identify the 3 parts of the given
paragraph. Box the topic sentence and encircle the concluding sentence of the
paragraph and underline the supporting sentences.

NAME: _________________________________ DATE:_____________

GRADE & SECTION: _____________________ SCORE: ___________

Direction: Identify the 3 parts of the given paragraph. Box the topic
sentence and encircle the concluding sentence of the paragraph and
underline the supporting sentences.

1. Electric cars are the future in the auto industry. As climate change gets
worse, governments are going to start limiting the number of gasoline cars
being built. The cost of gas will continue to rise, which will make it harder for
people to afford to run gas powered cars. As battery technology improves,
electric cars will be able to travel further on a charge and cost less to buy.
Eventually, most gas powered cars will be replaced by electric cars.

2. There are many different kinds of animals that live in China. Tigers and
leopards are animals that live in China’s forests in the north. In the jungles,
monkeys swing in the trees, and elephants walk through the brush. There are
camels in the desserts in China that people use for transportation. Lots of
different kinds of animals make their home in China.

3. Euthanasia is a merciful and humane termination of prolonged suffering,

and not murder, as some proponents insist. There is no sane reason why a
person with a terminal illness should have to suffer the agony, humiliation,
and degradation of a slow, certain death when other alternatives are
available. Certainly no one wants to die, but like taxes, it is unavoidable.
V. ASSIGNMENT

Direction: In a 1 whole sheet of paper, compose a 2 paragraph essay with a

minimum of 5 sentences each about the given topic below. Choose only 1 topic.

d. Friendship
