GRADE 8 ENGLISH: PARAGRAPH

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
1. Identify the basic characteristics of a paragraph and the structure of a paragraph.
2. Compose and organize an effective paragraph.
3. Value the essential parts and characteristics of an effective paragraph through a
literary text.

Canva presentation, Ipad (primary device), phone (secondary device),
laptop, Zoom app, Kahoot! app, Socrative, and any preferred browser.

III. Procedures
A. Preparation
- Prayer
- Greetings
- Checking of Attendance

B. Review
- Ask the class about the previous lesson.
- Ask the class if they learn in the previous lesson.
- Ask the class if they really understand the previous lesson.

C. Motivation
The teacher will present a table full of letters. The students will play an
educational game called “Find Me”. It is a game wherein students should find the word in
a table full of random letters. Basically, it’s “Word Search”.

D. Presentation of Lesson
The teacher will show the word “Paragraph”. The teacher asks the class if they
have an idea about the meaning of a paragraph. The teacher then proceeds to the next
slide. The teacher will ask the class about their opinion on the pictures viewed. The
teacher then explains the relationship between the pictures to the lesson.

E. Lesson Proper

Lesson 1: The teacher discusses the meaning of a paragraph.

What is a Paragraph?
- A subdivision of a written composition that consists of one or more sentences, deals
with one point or gives the words of one speaker, and begins on a new usually indented
line

Lesson 2: The teacher discusses the Features of an Effective Paragraph.

Features of an Effective Paragraph


- Unified
- Complete
- Coherent
- Emphasis/Order

Unified
- A paragraph revolves around a single idea. Therefore, the paragraph should not begin
to stray and develop new ideas.




Complete
- A complete paragraph expresses everything without leaving any gaps as far as the
information is concerned.

Coherent
- The sentences in the paragraph do not function independently/alone.

Emphasis/Order
- The sentences of the paragraph cannot be written haphazardly. The ideas progress in
sequential order.

Lesson 3: The teacher discusses the Parts of a Paragraph.

Parts of a Paragraph
- Topic Sentence/Introduction
- Supporting Sentences/Body
- Concluding Sentence/Conclusion

Topic Sentence/Introduction
- It constitutes the opening sentences of the paragraph. It introduces the main idea. Good
introductions often capture the interest of the reader.

Supporting Sentences/Body
- It constitutes the supporting sentences and ideas. It provides the reader with additional
details about the main idea.

Concluding Sentence/Conclusion
- It ties up loose ends of the paragraph and helps in reiterating or highlighting the main
idea.

F. Activities

Activity 1: After the teacher finished discussing “Lesson 1”, the teacher will provide an
activity. The activity is all about how students can provide the exact sequence of a story
or scenario. A sample scenario will be provided by the teacher.

Instructions: Students will go to the given link “Kahoot.com”. Students then


press/click “play”. Students then paste the code that the teacher provided them.

*BACKUP PLAN: If plan A fails because of connectivity issues. The teacher will give a similar activity*


Instructions:The following sentences bellow are part of a paragraph of which are


presented in scrambled order. Read the sentences carefully and decide the best sequence/
order they belong. Put them together in order to form a complete paragraph. Write your
paragraph on a piece of paper or type your paragraph in your device. Show your answers
by using the feature “Share screen” in Zoom after 5 minutes.

A. A mother and her 14-year-old son were talking about his girlfriend.
B. She thinks I’m handsome, fun, smart, and a good dancer.
C. And what do you think you like about her?
D. What does she like about you?

A. I’ve been chasing happiness, and it was useless. Thus, I should enjoy life.
B. The whole village hated him because he was gloomy and toxic.
C. An old man lived in the village.
D. When he turned eighty years old, everyone in the village was shocked.

Activity 2: After the teacher finished discussing “Lesson 2”, the teacher will provide an
activity. The activity is all about following the parts of a paragraph. Students will read the
given sentences and write the sentences in their respective area.

Instructions: Read the following sentences. Then write each sentence in the
organizer below following the parts in writing a paragraph.

- They are a living book where we can read valuable stories and get lessons in life.
- Our young generation today must learn to value the wisdom of our elders.
- The wise elders are a fountain of good counsels that can never be compared to any
material wealth in this world.
- The wisdom of our elders must then be treasured by our present generation.
- Our wise elders are a great source of knowledge, wisdom and information that will
help us, the youths to be better persons.

G. Application

Instructions: Read the following scrambled paragraphs and arrange the parts to form a
well-organized composition. Write your composition of the paragraph on piece of paper. Then,
discuss to the class why you think that the sentences you organized belong to that specific part of
the paragraph.

Land of the Morning

The country struggled and strived for self-rule and freedom. There were popular revolts and
uprising against Spain. Dr. Jose P. Rizal was executed on December 30, 1896. The short-lived Philippine
Republic was declared on June 12, 1898 with Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo as President of the Philippine
Republic. Manuel L. Quezon was the first President of the Commonwealth, November 15, 1935. On July
4, 1946, the Philippines became independent. Freedom became a precious heritage.

The Philippines is like no other place. It has 7,000 or so islands. It is an archipelago that stretches
from the North at the Southern tip of Taiwan to the tip ending close to Northern Borneo. It has a lot of
variations in geographic, climatic, and vegetational conditions.

It has a long and painful history. Ferdinand Magellan accidentally discovered the Philippines for
Spain in 1521. It was named after Philip II of Spain in 1541. The first Spanish settlement was established
in Cebu in 1565. The Capital was moved to Manila in 1571. Spain ceded the country to America. America
was involved in World War II. The country was invaded by the Japanese in 1941 and was liberated in
1945.




H. Generalization
After the discussion, the teacher will ask the following questions.
- Why do you think it is important to learn about paragraph?
- How will you apply your learnings about paragraph in your life?
- What’s one word that summarizes our lesson for today? In one sentence, why did you
choose that word?

After learning about paragraph, the students will be assessed by answering a quiz through
