Layers of The Atmosphere
Layers of The Atmosphere
I. OBJECTIVES
B. Performance Standard The learners should be able to analyze the advantage of the
location of the Philippines in relation to the climate, weather, and
seasons.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
II. CONTENT
A. References
IV. PROCEDURES
A. Reviewing previous lesson To let the students recall the previous lesson let the students
or presenting the new lesson answer the following activity.
B. Establishing a purpose of To let students appreciate the importance of the lesson, show the
the lesson learners the following pictures and ask some questions.
Guide Questions:
1. What are the five layers of the atmosphere? Estimate the height
of each layer.
2. In which layer is temperature increasing with increasing altitude?
3. In which layer is temperature decreasing with increasing altitude?
4. What is the relationship between temperature and altitude in the
troposphere? stratosphere? mesosphere? thermosphere?
exosphere?
5. Analyze the graph. What is the basis for the division of Earth’s
atmosphere?
E. Discussing new concepts After activity 3, the teacher will expound the different layers of the
and practicing new skills #2 atmosphere.
1. Troposphere
- starts at the Earth’s surface and extends 8 km to 14.5 km high.
- first layer
- "tropos" means change due to changing temperatures
- As altitude increases, the temperature in the troposphere decrease
2. Stratosphere
- second layer of the atmosphere
-"strat" means layer
- layer of air that starts just above the troposphere and extends to
about 50 km.
- temperature increases as the altitude increases
- ozone layer is found in this layer
- location where aircrafts fly because it is very stable
3. Mesosphere
- layer between 50 km and 80 km above the Earth’s surface
- “Meso” means middle
- temperature decreases as altitude increases.
- coldest layer (average temperature of -90 ℃)
- has thin layer of air adds friction to meteoroids which becomes
meteors producing a burning tail and seen shooting stars.
4. Thermosphere
- fourth layer
- “Thermo” means heat.
- hottest layer (beyond 1000 degrees celcius)
- Ionosphere can be found in this layer
- Spacecraft fly in this area.
5. Exosphere
- outermost layer
- "exo" means outside
- more than 700 km, up to 10 000 km from the surface of Earth with
no clear boundary
- satellites are stationed in this area
Processing Questions:
H. Making generalizations and Let the students complete the statements below:
abstractions about the lesson
In this lesson I learn about: _________________.
I also learned that the atmosphere has layers namely: _______,
___________, _________, ____________, and ___________.
It is important to value the arth's atmosphere because it
