Paper 1

2 hours

INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES:

This paper consists of two sections; A and B. It has three examination items.

Attempt all items in this paper

SECTION A (25 SCORES)

Item 1

The Uganda National Roads Authority plans to construct a new road connecting the
towns of Kampala and Jinja. The proposed road will pass through a rural area with
several farms and villages. The engineers need to ensure that the road is straight and
level to facilitate safe and efficient travel. According to engineers, the road will
describe an equation:

𝒚 = 𝟐𝒙 + 𝟔;

A railway road that transits goods from Mombasa to Kampala passing through Atiri
village in Tororo at a point A(-4,0), does Not cross Kampala and Jinja highway and

are parel to each other. Another straight road from Mbale to Busia cross the Kampala
Jinja highway at right angle and its perpendicular to it.

Task (25 score)

As a student of mathematics, help the engineers to:

i) Know the equation of the railway line from Mombasa to Kampala.

ii) Know the equation of the road Mbale-Busia highway.
iii) Locate the transport routes and point of intersection of the routes if any,
using a graph paper
iv) Identify any obstacles that may affect the construction of transport means in
Uganda.

SECTION B (40 SCORES)

Item 2

A water tank is built on a hill to supply water to a nearby village. The tank is 15
meters above the village level. A pipeline is laid from the tank to the village, with a
total length of 500 meters. If the pipeline drops 3 meters for every 20 meters of its
length, how many meters above the village level will the water surface be when the
tank is full?

Task (20 scores)

As student of mathematics, help the engineer:

i) Calculate the total drop in elevation of the pipeline (5 scores)

ii) Determine the elevation of the water surface above the village level (5
scores)
iii) If the tank is 8 meters deep, what percentage of the tank's capacity will be
usable? (5 scores)
iv) Suggest a design improvement to increase the usable capacity of the tank (5
scores)

Item 3

A school principal wants to analyze the scores of 10 students in a mathematics test to

identify areas for improvement. To critically analyze the score the principal is

supposed to compute for averages, modes, median and quartiles. But he does not
know much about these mathematical computations. The scores are:

45, 32, 41, 28, 35, 40, 38, 42, 31, 39

Task (20 scores)

As a student of mathematics, help the principal to know:

a) The average score of the students.

b) The middle score when the scores.

c) If there is a score that appears more than once? If so, what is it?

d) The difference between the highest and lowest scores.

i) (5scores)
