Division School Notes
Division School Notes
1. The number we are dividing is called the dividend, which is 10 here in the
above example.
2. The number by which we are dividing is called the divisor,
which is 3 here.
3. The answer in the division is called the quotient, which is 3
here.
4. The number that remains after dividing is called the
remainder, which is 1 here.
You can check you answers using the formula

TASK: 1
1. Look at the pictures and divide into groups.
Task 2
Write the dividend, divisor and quotient for the
following.
FACTS OF DIVISION
1. In division we start from the biggest place value.
2. 0 divided by a number is always 0.
e.g. 0 ÷ 4=0
3. Any number divided by 0 is infinite (no answer).
e.g. 4 ÷ 0 = no answer
4. The quotient of any number divided by 1 is always the same
number.
e.g. 36 ÷ 1 = 36
5. A number divided by itself gives the quotient as 1.
e.g. 36 ÷ 36 = 1
6. The remainder is always less than the divisor.
e.g. 9 ÷ 2 =4 remainder = 1
7. Always remember -
Dividend = Divisor x Quotient e.g. 35 ÷ 7=5 or
35 = 7 x 5

PROPERTIES OF DIVISION
1. Division by 1 Property:
If we divide a number by 1 the quotient is the number itself.
In other words, when any number is divided by 1, we always get
the number itself as the quotient. When any number is divided by
1, we always get the number itself.
For example: 29 ÷ 1 = 29 825 ÷ 1 = 825
2. Division by itself Property:
If we divide a number by the number itself, the quotient is 1.
In other words, when any number is divided by the number
itself, we always get 1 as the quotient. When any number is
divided by the number itself, we always get 1 as the quotient.
For example: (i) 275 ÷ 275 = 1 (ii) 105 ÷ 105 = 1
3. Division any Number by 0 Property:
The division of a number by 0 is meaningless.
For example: (i) 35 ÷ 0 = no meaning (ii) 65 ÷ 0 = no
meaning
Note: The divisor can never be zero. Division by zero is not
possible.
4. Division of 0 by any Number Property:
0 divided by a number gives 0 as the quotient. In other words,
when 0 is divided by any number, we always get 0 as the
quotient. For example:
(i) 0 ÷ 25 = 0 (ii) 0 ÷ 100 = 0

Divisibility Rules
1. Divisibility by 2, 5 and 10
A number is divisible by 2 if the final digit (the digit in the ones
place) is even.
Numbers ending in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8 therefore are divisible by 2.
A number is divisible by 5 if the final digit is a 0 or a 5.
A number is divisible by 10 if the final digit is a 0.
2. Divisibility by 3, 6 and 9
A number is divisible by 3 if the sum of its digits is divisible by 3.
For example, 285 is divisible by 3 because 2 + 8 + 5 = 15 is
divisible by 3.
A number is divisible by 6 if it is divisible by both 3 and 2 (see
above rules).
A number is divisible by 9 if the sum of its digits is divisible by 9.
For example, 285 is not divisible by 9 because 2+ 8 + 5 = 15 is
not divisible by 9.
