SpaceX’s ninth Starship flight test ends in another explosion.

For the third time in a row, a Starship test ended in a “rapid unscheduled disassembly,” after tumbling toward the Indian Ocean rather than making the planned controlled descent and soft splashdown.

As noted by Space.com, this mission ran into issues trying to achieve several goals: the reused Super Heavy booster rocket broke up about six minutes into the flight instead of splashing down in the Gulf of Mexico, they were unable to test deploying eight Starlink satellite dummies, and then the ship lost control about a half-hour after launch due to a leak in its fuel tank systems.

No kings?

In case you missed it, King Charles III opened Canadian parliament with a speech from a literal gilded throne, hailing “democracy, pluralism, the rule of law, self-determination and freedom” as “values which Canadians hold dear.”

Yeah, I don’t know either.

Read the EU’s full non-compliance decision against Apple.

Last month, the European Commission ruled that the App Store’s “anti-steering” policies — which put restrictions on developers pointing to external purchases — violate the Digital Markets Act. That ruling has since been published in full, stating that Apple must pay the €500 million within three months, or it will incur interest. Apple must also come into compliance with EU laws by the end of next month.

The Last of Us opens up a whole new perspective for its next season

The last few minutes of the season 2 finale are an important indication of where the story is going.

Anthropic’s voice mode for Claude launches in beta.

The conversational mode for Anthropic’s AI chatbot is now becoming available for users of its mobile apps, “gradually.”

TechCrunch notes that chief product officer Mike Krieger confirmed the rumored feature was on the way in a recent interview, while Anthropic says that it can integrate with Google Workspace, and that free users can expect “20-30 voice messages” before session limits cut them off, while paid users have higher limits.

Homey’s pint-sized smart home hub is now available.

Announced at CES, the $199 Homey Pro Mini can connect to Zigbee, Matter, and Thread devices, along with those from brands like Ikea, Sonos, Lutron, Roomba, Nest, Philips Hue, and Aqara, to run your smart home.

Unlike its bigger sibling, the $400 Homey Pro, it doesn’t support Z-Wave, BLE, or IR, and can handle fewer integrations, but is a good option for a simpler way into more advanced home automation.

The latest news in brain chips.

Following the news that Valve CEO Gabe Newell’s stealthy company, Starfish, plans to produce its first brain chip later this year, there’s a report that Elon Musk’s Neuralink has almost tripled in value in less than two years. Semafor reports that a recent $600 million investment valued the company at over $9 billion.

The technology has only been implanted in three people so far, the latest being a non-verbal ALS patient who used it to narrate this video.

Sharge’s new USB charger has a retro dot matrix status display.

There’s no word yet on a wider global release, but Sharge has launched a new USB charger in China that trades LCD and OLED screens for a grid of white LEDs on the side showing its charging status. It’s available with 140W of power output and 3 USB-C ports, or 100W that adds an additional USB-A port. The display can rotate at the push of a button so it remains upright and easy to read.

The low-res display on Sharge’s new USB wall charger is easy to read at a distance.
The display can be rotated to accommodate where the charger is plugged in, and its brightness can be adjusted so it’s not lighting up a room while you’re trying to sleep.

Coinbase announces it will be a “major sponsor” of America250,

the committee organizing Donald Trump’s 250th anniversary celebration of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Coinbase’s Chief Policy Officer Faryar Shizad made this announcement during a panel at the Bitcoin Conference that included Chris LaCivita, the co-campaign manager of Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign. This isn’t their first donation to a Trump committee: Coinbase previously donated $1 million to Trump’s inauguration committee, and subsequently, the SEC dropped a lawsuit against Coinbase a month later.

Several of CISA’s top officials are gone.

The tumultuous year under the Trump administration continues for the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), as many senior officials across the agency have recently left, or will soon be leaving, according to a report by The Washington Post and cited by Cybersecurity Drive. These departures punctuate numerous setbacks the agency has faced since Trump took office, including being told to halt its election security efforts and almost lapsing the CVE program that some of the world’s biggest companies rely on to track cybersecurity vulnerabilities.

“It feels like the wrong people are leaving,” said a second CISA employee, who insisted on anonymity to speak freely. “All of these departures make it feel like people are leaving the mission and creating a vacuum.”

The Strategic Bitcoin Reserve Act will soon ramp up in Congress.

During Code and Country at the Bitcoin Conference, Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) mentioned that as soon as stablecoin bills are passed through Congress and signed into law, the Republicans were ready to gun on creating the Reserve. “It’s gonna be a heavier lift than I thought,” she added, because after watching her colleagues debate the GENIUS Act, it was clear that many of them “don’t understand” crypto.

The US reportedly doesn’t want to regulate CO2 from power plants anymore.

Waymo identifies three new cities for robotaxi testing.

The Alphabet-owned company is planning to set its vehicles loose in Houston, Orlando, and San Antonio as part of its 2025 “road trip.” The vehicles will be manually driven, and the testing operations are not necessarily a precursor to the launch of a commercial robotaxi service — nor is Waymo precluded from launching a service, either. The company sees it as an opportunity to see how well its self-driving system adapts to new locales with varying weather conditions and regional driving habits. Waymo previously said it was testing its vehicles in Las Vegas, Miami, and Japan.

Elon Musk reportedly approached Apple years ago about an iPhone / SpaceX satellite deal.

The Information reports that three years ago, Musk offered Apple an 18-month exclusive connection via SpaceX in return for $5 billion up front, and $1 billion per year after that to support satellite-connected iPhone features. If Apple didn’t take it within 72 hours, he threatened to announce a competing feature.

Apple went forward with Globalstar (the report also mentions a canceled “Project Eagle” effort with Boeing that would’ve delivered full-blown internet service), and before the iPhone 14 launched, Starlink announced a deal with T-Mobile. Later that year, Musk and Cook met at Apple HQ to discuss Twitter’s App Store presence, “among other things.”

Netflix’s Straw Hats are up to something.

This “special announcement” teaser for the upcoming second season of Netflix’s One Piece adaptation could just be a reminder that new episodes are on the way, but it (and all the little hoof prints at the end) are probably a sign that we can expect to hear new details about the show at this year’s Tudum event.
