Apple

Founded in 1976 by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne, Apple is best known for making some of the world’s most ubiquitous consumer devices, software, and services: the iPhone, iPad, iMac and MacBook computers, Apple TV, Apple Watch, iOS, iCloud, iTunes, Apple Music, Apple Pay, and many more. Led by CEO Tim Cook since 2011, Apple is one of the largest technology companies in the world alongside Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Facebook.

Read the EU’s full non-compliance decision against Apple.

Last month, the European Commission ruled that the App Store’s “anti-steering” policies — which put restrictions on developers pointing to external purchases — violate the Digital Markets Act. That ruling has since been published in full, stating that Apple must pay the €500 million within three months, or it will incur interest. Apple must also come into compliance with EU laws by the end of next month.

Texas governor signs age verification law challenged by Tim Cook.

Governor Greg Abbott signed SB 2420 on Tuesday, which will require app store owners like Apple and Google to verify the ages of their users before they can download apps. Last week, Apple CEO Tim Cook called Abbott about the law in an attempt to intervene, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The law will go into effect on January 1st, 2026.

Elon Musk reportedly approached Apple years ago about an iPhone / SpaceX satellite deal.

The Information reports that three years ago, Musk offered Apple an 18-month exclusive connection via SpaceX in return for $5 billion up front, and $1 billion per year after that to support satellite-connected iPhone features. If Apple didn’t take it within 72 hours, he threatened to announce a competing feature.

Apple went forward with Globalstar (the report also mentions a canceled “Project Eagle” effort with Boeing that would’ve delivered full-blown internet service), and before the iPhone 14 launched, Starlink announced a deal with T-Mobile. Later that year, Musk and Cook met at Apple HQ to discuss Twitter’s App Store presence, “among other things.”

Chinese iPhone exports to the US are way, way down.

Shipments dropped 76 percent in April 2025 compared to the year before, as those from India grew by the same percentage, according to new figures from Omdia. April’s figures are low overall, but skewed by March’s efforts to rush 600 tons of product into the US before tariffs hit.

The big question is if Apple will keep prioritizing Indian-made iPhones now that Trump has threatened fresh tariffs on all phones that aren’t made in the USA.

This functional Macintosh replica is just 2.4-inches tall.

1-Bit Rainbow, an online store full of spare parts and accessories for keeping vintage Apple computers running, is now selling a functional original Macintosh replica that’s just 2.4-inches tall.

The Pico-mac-nano is powered by a Raspberry Pi Pico which has more than enough power to emulate the Macintosh, and while its creator warns there may be stability issues and incompatibility with some older software, the tiny desktop does support modern USB keyboards and mice.

The Pico-mac-nano features a tiny 480x640 pixel LCD screen with the OS running at just 480x342 pixels.

An optional power module can run the Pico-mac-nano off a battery instead of USB.
The Collectors Edition comes in a replica of the original Macintosh’s Picasso cardboard shipping box, complete with flexible inserts.

Get ready for Apple’s glassy operating systems overhaul.

This year’s rumored redesign for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS is also coming to watchOS and tvOS, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in today’s Power On newsletter. In an April subscriber edition of Power On, he wrote that watchOS would only get elements of the redesign “here and there.”

It’s expected the updates will take cues from the look of the glassy, translucent visionOS, which, Gurman writes, is also getting tweaks where they “make sense for a headset.”

Trump’s tariffs threat extends to Samsung.

When asked about his latest tariff threat toward Apple, President Donald Trump said the 25 percent tax would affect Samsung and other phone makers, too. “It would be also Samsung and anybody that makes that product, otherwise it wouldn’t be fair,” Trump said during a White House briefing.

Last week, Trump warned Apple CEO Tim Cook that he’s “not interested in you building in India,” and instead wants to bring iPhone production to the US — a move many experts have said won’t work.

Reality isn’t a simulation, but the Severance running sequence is.

You’re supposed to pick up on some of the visual uncanniness of Mark S.’ sprint through Lumon HQ in the first episode of Severance’s second season, but this behind-the-scenes breakdown video from Industrial Light & Magic highlights just how much of the scene was created with VFX wizardry.

Chief of War hits Apple TV Plus on August 1st.

Though Apple TV Plus’ upcoming historical drama Chief of War chronicles the real story of how Native Hawaiian warrior Kaʻiana (Jason Momoa) rebelled against king Kamehameha I, the miniseries’ first trailer kinda feels like an audition tape for another project about a (fictional) man at war.

A big Hey update following the Epic v. Apple ruling.

“No more weird burner accounts,” David Heinemeier Hansson says in a blog post. “Now you can sign up directly for a real email address in HEY, and if you like what we have to offer (and I think you will!), you’ll be able to pay the $99/year for a subscription via a web-based flow that it’s now kosher to link to from the app itself.”

iPadOS 17.7.8 may fix older iPads’ login issues.

The update, intended for iPads that Apple ended full support for in iPadOS 18, replaces iPadOS 17.7.7, which Apple pulled last week after users complained that it was causing apps to log them out repeatedly, as 9to5Mac notes.

Apple really doesn’t like Dave & Buster’s.

Last week the Search Engine podcast flagged a weird iOS bug: the Messages app flat-out refuses to send audio messages about Dave & Buster’s. The podcasters tried to figure out why, and app developer Guilherme Rambo dug even deeper. The explanation involves automatic transcriptions, HTML, and iOS’ dogged insistence that the restaurant chain uses an ampersand in its trademark.

Patreon will no longer force creators to change their billing method.

Last year, Patreon asked creators to switch to subscription billing after Apple said Patreon had to use the company’s in-app payment method or “risk being kicked out of the App Store.” Thanks to the latest Epic Games v. Apple ruling, Patreon has lifted its November 2025 deadline for all creators to make the switch to subscription billing.

Additionally, Patreon creators will once again be able to let supporters purchase memberships at the price they’ve set on iOS.
