The Cooling Tower structure will be made in

FRP. The tower frame work shall consist of
structural shapes of pultruded fibreglass
composite, stiffened with diagonal braces to
transfer wind, earthquake and other live
loads to the basin. The FRP has the following
characteristics:

High Strength / Light Weight

FRP approximate the strength of steel in
tension and compression. 80% less than
steel, 30% less than aluminum;

Corrosion Resistance
Impervious to a broad range of corrosive
materials; immune to deterioration;

Quality Construction
Cut and predrilled to exact specifications
from our manufacturing/fabrication facilities,
fibreglass pultrusions will not warp, twist, or
split after fabrication which simplifies field
assembly and tower construction is safe,
reliable and efficient using pultruded
structural components.

Fire Retardant
FRP pultrusion can be supplied with flame
spread rate below 25

Mechanical equipment in each cell of the

tower has a fiberglass reinforced polyester
fan stack
Each stack has a belled inlet and conical,
diverging exit for reduced air pressure drop
losses and pressure recovery for high fan
efficiency. Fan stack sections are connected
via lap joints allowing field adjustment of the
stack diameter and control of fan blade tip
clearance maximizing fan performance. The
fan stacks are secured to the structure by
through bolts attached to deck joists. Each
stack has a removable access panel opening
for maintenance on the fans and gears

The nozzles foreseen are Ecojet type. This

innovative nozzle is SPIG patented and it has
been designed in order to reach the followings
main goals:
• Large square water distribution area
(approximately 1 m2) in order to avoid
the overlapping of water distribution
area each others
• Uniform specific water load in order to
solve the air by-pass where the feed
water is low.
• Low distance between nozzle and filling
(600 mm) in order to avoid the pump
head
• Low head water pressure in order to
avoid the pump head
• Self cleaning surface by means of
rotating impeller
• Anti clogging

The filling foreseen is SPIG Y20 type.

This low clog Polyvinile clorur film type is
designed with vertical flutes 20 mm spaced,
selected to maximise the heat and mass
exchange coefficients. The sheets special
corrugation guarantees direct changes in air
and water flows directions and it increases
the cooling and thermal efficiency while the
vertical channels allows the pollutants to be
easily washed through.
SPIG Y20 is recommended for sea water
cooling Tower and every time the Customer
needs high performance with low clog film.
In order to guarantee a high performance of
the Cooling Tower and in order to avoid any
damage to the film it is strongly
recommended that Owner/operator consults
a specialized Company in order to select the
most suitable water treatment.
In this case the following parameters must
be guaranteed:
- Max Total suspended solid (TSS) < 100
ppm
- Biological and scale control must be
carried out
- Max oils or grease concentration 1 ppm

The drift eliminators foreseen are of shell

type.
Shell eliminators utilize a series of sinusoidal
shaped rows assembled into a panel by
means of suitable self bearing spacers. The
row shape forces the leaving air stream to
make three changes in direction. This drift
eliminator can guarantee low drift rate and
low pressure drop.

3.2 MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT

The fans are driven by an electric motor

designed for severe Cooling Tower service.
The motor is located outside the wet stream
air flowing in the fan stack.
Motor supports are designed to transfer the
dynamic loads to the cooling tower structure,
minimising vibrations and allowing easy
maintenance and alignment. All the rotating
parts outside the fan stack are protected by
accidental interference in accordance with the
most updated safety standard.

Drive shaft is transmitting movement from

motor to gear-box.
The floating type supplied has the primary
function to accommodate the slight shaft
misalignments which can develop in service;
to absorb shocks, vibrations and pulsations;
accept load reversal; minimise backlash;
minimise installation and maintenance
difficulties.

Fan is multi-blade type and has the main

function of ensuring the Cooling Tower design
air volume necessary for cooling.
The fan is placed on the high section of the
cell, (fan deck) and it is directly coupled with
the gear box.

The gear-box is geared to reduce speed of

motor to speed required by fan. The box is
perfectly waterproof to avoid any entry of
water; seals on slow shaft and high velocity
shaft are of labyrinth type. The box is
properly stiffened resist to the stresses that
are acting during running, and to reject heat
without any auxiliary cooling system.
The construction and sizing is in accordance
with AGMA codes.

The mechanical system is provided with

following oil and grease pipes:
9 Reducer breather which is extended
outside the fan stack to prevent oil
contamination from water and steam
leaving the cooling tower.
9 Pipe for oil filling and draining; the
same pipe is used for both operations
with the help of a discharge valve on
the fan deck.
9 Level indicator on the fan deck which is
perfectly aligned with the glass
indicator existing on the box of the gear
reducer.
