Course: BS Criminology 1
MODULE 4 DEONTOLOGY

I. Go online and look for news items on whistle- blowers. Identify the crime or
unethical act that they are exposing as well as the perpetrators of the crime.
Detail your findings and opinion below.
* Harry Templeton worked as a printer on newspapers owned by Robert Maxwell's
Mirror Group. In 1985, Templeton was appointed as a trustee of the Mirror Group
Pension Scheme, but was fired in 1988 after challenging Maxwell's misuses of pension
funds. Only after Maxwell's death a couple of years later was it revealed that Maxwell
had stolen £400m of staff pension money.
II. Reconcile these two topics: our discussion of autonomy and duty to “speaking
truth to power”. Suppose you are already working for a company and your boss
tells you that you should offer a bribe to a government agent to obtain permit to
build and operate a factory in a province. What would you do? What are your
alternatives if you believe that it is wrong to bribe government agencies?
 First, I would refuse to do something that is clearly illegal. Second, I would talk to
his or her superior and/or to Human Resources about this incident. IF you
experience negative outcomes from doing either, file a grievance and start
looking for a new job and company. This is all based on the assumption that you
do not want to be put in a position where you have to do illegal or unethical
things in your work.
III. Consider other topics in the field of business ethics. Select one and give a
presentation of the significance of discussing this topic.
 Business ethics is a huge field. Instead, it considers business ethics as an
academic discipline other responses denied that firms are moral agents also
selecting a normative framework and applying it to a range of issues is a
questions about product safety are a matter of significant debate. Employees
make better decisions in less time with business ethics as a guiding principle; this
increases productivity and overall employee morale. When employees complete
work in a way that is based on honesty and integrity, the whole organization
benefits.
