It covers identifying explicit and implicit claims in texts, and recognizing different types of claims - claims of fact, claims of policy, and claims of value. The document provides definitions and examples of each type of claim. It then includes 3 activities for students: 1) identifying explicit and implicit claims in a poem, 2) identifying the type of claim in several statements, and 3) creating their own claims of fact, value and policy for two given topics. The overall purpose is to help students learn to analyze texts for different types of claims.

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET IN READING AND WRITING

QUARTER 3, WEEK 3

Competencies:
1. Identify claims explicitly or implicitly made in a written text.(EN11/12RWS-IIIij-6)
a. Claim of fact EN11/12RWS-IIIij-6.1;
b. Claim of policy EN11/12RWS-IIIij-6.2;
c. Claim of value EN11/12RWS-IIIij-6.3

2. Recognize and create examples of the different types of claims (claim of fact, claim
of policy, claim of value)

FACTS.
What is a claim?
Critical reading enables you to distinguish the explicit and implicit information provided by the
author. Explicit information is information that is clearly stated in the text. Implicit, on the other hand,
are ideas suggested in the text but not directly stated. This is where the ability to make inferences
based on clues within the text is applied.
Through proper identification of explicit and implicit information, the critical reader can properly
evaluate the claim/s made by an author. Claims state the point or position of an author regarding a
certain topic. The claim statement is further proven by supporting details from various resources and
reliable evidence. This is the most important part of a written text as it does not only limit the scope of
the topic but it also gives a concise summary of the writer’s thoughts and argument.
Types of Claims
A. Claims of Fact. (existence of something/definition or classification/facts -- inferences
about past, present or future)
Types of factual claims (generally "objective")
1. Factual / historical
2. Relational - causal connections
3. Predictive
Proof requires:
1. sufficient and appropriate grounds
1.1 reliable authority
1.2 recent data
1.3 accurate, typical data
1.4 clearly defined terms -no loaded language
2. a clear distinction between fact and inference.

B. Claims of Value (taste & morals / good-bad) [make value judgments/ resolve conflict
between values/ quasi policy (rightness of it; relative merit)]
Proof requires:
1. Establishing standards of evaluation, (i.e. a warrant that defines what constitutes
instances of the relevant value) note the priority of the value in this instance.
2. Establish the advantage (practical or moral) of your standards.
3. Use examples to clarify abstract values
4. Use credible authorities for support.

C. Claims of Policy (action / should or ought) - usually involves sub-claims of fact and
value
Proof requires:
1. Making proposed action clear
2. need (justification)
3. plan, (must be workable)
4. benefit (advantages)
5. consider opposition / counter arguments

ACTIVITY 1. IDENTIFYING EXPLICIT AND IMPLICIT CLAIMS

Read the poem below and answer the questions based on the explicit and implicit claims
expressed in the poem.
Annabel Lee
BY EDGAR ALLAN POE
It was many and many a year ago,    Went envying her and me—
   In a kingdom by the sea, Yes!—that was the reason (as all men know,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know    In this kingdom by the sea)
   By the name of Annabel Lee; That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
And this maiden she lived with no other thought    Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.
   Than to love and be loved by me.
But our love it was stronger by far than the love
I was a child and she was a child,    Of those who were older than we—
   In this kingdom by the sea,    Of many far wiser than we—
But we loved with a love that was more than love And neither the angels in Heaven above
—    Nor the demons down under the sea
   I and my Annabel Lee— Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
With a love that the wingèd seraphs of Heaven    Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
   Coveted her and me.
For the moon never beams, without bringing me
And this was the reason that, long ago, dreams
   In this kingdom by the sea,    Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling And the stars never rise, but I feel the bright
   My beautiful Annabel Lee; eyes
So that her highborn kinsmen came    Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
   And bore her away from me, And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
To shut her up in a sepulchre    Of my darling—my darling—my life and my
   In this kingdom by the sea. bride,
   In her sepulchre there by the sea—
   In her tomb by the sounding sea.

The angels, not half so happy in Heaven,
