FACTS.
What is a claim?
Critical reading enables you to distinguish the explicit and implicit information provided by the
author. Explicit information is information that is clearly stated in the text. Implicit, on the other hand,
are ideas suggested in the text but not directly stated. This is where the ability to make inferences
based on clues within the text is applied.
Through proper identification of explicit and implicit information, the critical reader can properly
evaluate the claim/s made by an author. Claims state the point or position of an author regarding a
certain topic. The claim statement is further proven by supporting details from various resources and
reliable evidence. This is the most important part of a written text as it does not only limit the scope of
the topic but it also gives a concise summary of the writer’s thoughts and argument.
Types of Claims
A. Claims of Fact. (existence of something/definition or classification/facts -- inferences
about past, present or future)
Types of factual claims (generally "objective")
1. Factual / historical
2. Relational - causal connections
3. Predictive
Proof requires:
1. sufficient and appropriate grounds
1.1 reliable authority
1.2 recent data
1.3 accurate, typical data
1.4 clearly defined terms -no loaded language
2. a clear distinction between fact and inference.
C. Claims of Policy (action / should or ought) - usually involves sub-claims of fact and
value
Proof requires:
1. Making proposed action clear
2. need (justification)
3. plan, (must be workable)
4. benefit (advantages)
5. consider opposition / counter arguments
1. Our home is a place that shelters our families and makes us feel safe. This is also where
we go and rest our weary bodies at the end of a tiring day. Therefore, disputes on land
ownership affect not only the families involved, but also the whole nation in general. What
claims of policies can you give that is the result of people losing their homes and
homeland?
