Properties of Sounds
Learning Competency: Describe the characteristics of sound using the concepts of wavelength,
velocity, and amplitude (S7LT-IIId-7).
I. Objective:
After performing this activity you should be able to:
Describe the characteristics of a sound.
II. Material:
Guitar/ gitara
III. Procedure:
1. Label the strings of the guitar as S1, S2 and so on. Labeling should start with the thinnest guitar
string.
2. Pluck each guitar string. Listen to the sounds produced.
Observation:
SET A
1. What did you observed when you plucked each of the guitar strings and sound is produced?
How then is sound produced?
___________________________________________________________________________
2. Is there a difference in the sound produced by each strings? How do they differ?
___________________________________________________________________________
3. Which string produced a higher sound? Which string produced a lower sound?
___________________________________________________________________________
4. Is there a change in the sound produced when you pluck the guitar string harder? How does
hard plucking of guitar strings affect the pitch of the sound produced?
__________________________________________________________________________
5. Is there a difference in the sound produced when the guitar string is shorter?
__________________________________________________________________________
6. How can you make a softer sound? How can you make a louder sound?
__________________________________________________________________________
7. Which guitar string (shorter side or longer side) provides higher pitch? Which part provides
lower pitch?
__________________________________________________________________________
8. What factors affect the pitch and loudness of the sound produced by the guitar strings?
__________________________________________________________________________
SET B
Strum each guitar string without holding the frets. (String #1 is the lower most string while string
#6 is the uppermost string.) Record all your observations in the table provided.
