This document describes a basic pneumatic circuit using a double-acting cylinder. It lists the objectives of understanding the operating principle of a double-acting cylinder and being familiar with the components used in such a circuit. It then lists the tools and equipment needed, including a pneumatic trainer, compressor, aluminum profile board, manifold, double-acting cylinder, directional control valves, and tubing. The exercise is to advance a double-acting cylinder using a 3/2 way push button valve and have it return when the button is released. The procedure outlines drawing and testing the circuit. Self-tests are provided to check understanding of the circuit and components.

Basic Pneumatic Circuit using Double-Acting Cylinder

I. Objectives:
1. To be able to understand the operating principle of a double-acting cylinder.
2. To be familiar with the components used in a basic pneumatic circuit using a
double -acting cylinder.
3. To design a basic pneumatic circuit and simulate it in a pneumatic trainer.
II. Tools/Equipment, Materials needed.
TP 101 Festo Pneumatic Trainer that have the ff:
Pneumatic Compressor
Festo Aluminum Profile Simulation Board
FRL/service Unit
Manifold
Double -Acting Cylinder
3/2 way directional control valve, Push Button actuated, spring return
5/2 way directional control valve, Air actuated, spring return
Pneumatic Tubing

IV. Exercise:
1. The double-acting cylinder is to advance when a 3/2-way pushbutton actuated valve is
activated. When the push button is released, the cylinder is to travel back to the end
position.

V. Procedure:
1.    Analyze the problem.
2.    Draw the pneumatic circuit and let your instructor check your work.(you can draw the
circuit at  the space provided below and use the symbols as a guide)
3.    Identify the components needed for this problem.
4.    Attach the selected components on the aluminum profile plate.
5.    Test all the attached components if working properly.
6.    Pipe up the circuit with the air pressure switch off.
7.    Let your instructor check your work.
Pneumatic Control Circuit:
1.    a. direct Control of Double-acting Cylinder

1.    b. Indirect Control of Double-acting Cylinder

Self Test Evaluation:

1. Draw the diagram of no. 4 in Testing Procedure below :

2. Refer to procedure no.4, what is the reaction of the double acting cylinder when two
push buttons were used and both are actuated? Answer: C .
a.    No action       b. stays at center     c. extend        d. none of these

3. What is the type of control used in procedure no. 4?  Answer: A .
a. direct control        b. indirect` control    c. automatic control    d. manual control

4. The noisy sound during the operation of the pneumatic system is caused by the
pressure:  Answer: B .
a. entering cylinder              b. leaving cylinder   c. leaving valve        c. none of these

5.  Connect the 3 pneumatic circuits below and write the letter of the best set of
components. Ans. Letter __B__

Explain what will happen with the other two sets.
Set A   - by pressing the push button, we can extend the piston but it will never retract.
Since we are using 3/2 way directional control valve, air actuated, spring returned is not
compatible with double acting cylinder because double-acting cylinder has 2 inputs, at
extend side and at retract side, while our control valve has only one output port. Since it
has 1 output port, regardless of its ability to go back to its original position when
compress air is not present, the piston still won’t retract because no air is pushing it.

Set C   - The circuit will be useless, no matter how hard we push the push button we
won’t be able to actuate the control valve, 5/2 way directional control valve, Air
actuated, spring return, because the air is leaking and there is not enough pressure to
actuate our control valve. Additionally, if we are going to use a single acting cylinder
there is no need to use 5/2 way directional control valve, Air actuated, spring return, it is
better to use 3/2 way directional control valve, air actuated, spring return instead. Since
single acting cylinder has a spring inside, it doesn’t need compressed air to retract that’s
why it has only one input which can be found on the extend side of the pneumatic
cylinder

6. Draw the symbols of the following:
a. Rotary Actuator

b. Tandem Cylinder

c. Double-ended piston cylinder

d. Air motor

or

e. Double-Acting cylinder
with cushion at the
advance movement
