Rotational Equilibrium and Rotational Dynamics

1. Rotational dynamics is the study of motion and forces that cause rotation. Key terms include angular speed, angular acceleration, angular displacement, torque, rotational work, and axis of rotation. 2. Formulas are provided for angular speed, angular acceleration, angular displacement, torque, moment of force, and rotational work. Common conversions between linear and angular units are also described. 3. Sample problems demonstrate calculations for angular acceleration, torque, and angular displacement. A quiz with multiple choice and problem solving questions follows to test understanding of the material.

Rotational Equilibrium and Rotational

Dynamics
DEFINITION OF TERMS 1. ANGULAR SPEED
1. Rotational Dynamics – study of motion and where:
the forces that cause an object to rotate ω = angular speed
about an axis θ = angular displacement
2. Angular Speed – the rate of change of t = time
angular displacement
3. Angular acceleration – change in angular 2. ANGULAR ACCELERATION
speed over time where:
4. Angular displacement – the angle swept by α = angular acceleration
the radius of a circle that points to a ω = final angular speed
rotating object. wo = initial angular speed
5. Torque – measurement of the force that t = time
causes objects to rotate about an axis
6. Rotational work – work done on a rigid body 3. ANGULAR DISPLACEMENT
due to the sum of the torques integrated where:
over the angle through with the body θ = angular displacement
7. Axis of rotation – a line somewhere within S = arc length
the object where it rotates r = radius
8. Rotational equilibrium - the sum of
clockwise torques about any point (which TAKE NOTE:
acts as a pivot) must equal to the sum of
anti-clockwise torques about the same point. 360˚ = 2∏ radians
9. Moment of a  force  (r) - is defined as the
turning effect of the force about a pivot
360˚
1 radian = = 57.3 ˚
and is the product of the force (F) and the 2∏ radians
perpendicular distance (d) from the line of Therefore, 1 rad = 57.3˚
action of the force to the pivot.
4. TORQUE
FORMULAS
where:
Rotational equivalents of linear variables: τ = torque
F = force applied
x (displacement) = θ (angle/angular displacement)
r = distance from the center of rotation to the
v (speed) =ω (angular speed) point where the force is exerted
Θ = is the angle between the two vectors
a (acceleration) = α (angular acceleration)

t (time) = t (time) 5. MOMENT OF FORCE

F (force) = τ (torque) Where:
r = the moment of force
Linear equation and Rotational equations F = the force
example: d = the perpendicular distance from the line of
action of the force to the pivot

6. ROTATIONAL WORK
Where:
W = work
τ = torque
Θ = angular displacement
