TUTORIAL ONE (1) QUESTIONS

1. Consider the resistor-diode circuit of figure 1. Assume the voltage source is 12 volts
and the resistor is 2kΩ. Further assume the diode is silicon and its bulk resistance is 10Ω.
Using the three diode approximations, compute the circulating current.

Figure 1

2. Calculate the circulating current for the circuit in Figure 2. Also find the diode and
resistor voltages. Assume the power supply is 20volts, the diode is silicon and the
resistor is 2KΩ.

3. Determine the circulating current for the circuit in figure 3. Also find the diode and
resistor voltages. Assume the power supply is 9volts, the diodes are silicon and
R1=1kΩ, R2=2kΩ.

4. Calculate the source current and resistor volage for the circuit in figure 4. Also find
the resistor voltage if the polarity is reversed. Assume the power supply is 10volts, the
diode is silicon and the resistors are 1kΩ.

6. Determine the circulating current for the circuit in figure 6. Also find the diode and
resistor voltages. Assume the power supply is 9volts, the Zener voltage is 5.1volts and
the resistor is 3.3kΩ. What will be the current value if the polarity of the diode is
reversed.

7. Determine the circulating current for the circuit in figure 7, Assume the power supply
is 5volts, the LED forward voltage is 2.1volts and the resistor is 330Ω. Reverse the
polarity of the LED and repeat the calculations.

10. Design a rectifier/filter that will produce an output voltage of approximately 30volts
wit a maximum current draw of 300mA. It should be fed from 120 VAC RMS source,
The ripple voltage should be less than 10% of the nominal output voltage at full load.

11. Determine the maximum load current for a DC supply such as shown in figure 10.
The capacitor voltage is 15volts average with ±1 volt of ripple
(i.e., 16 volts dropping to 14 volts). The Zener potential is 12 volts and Rlimit
is 4.7 Ω.
