especially compared to Windows. Its stability makes it ideal
for servers, data centers, and critical infrastructure.
 Diverse Use Cases: Linux is used across the board: from
embedded systems in IoT devices, to web servers, cloud
computing, and even smartphones (Android is based on

of networks, systems, and applications.

 Preinstalled Security Tools: Kali comes preloaded with over

create a persistent storage on the USB for saving

setting up a Dual Boot, you can choose which OS to use when you
start your computer. This method provides a flexible way to use
Linux alongside another OS without sacrificing your previous
setup.

 Step-by-Step Guide to Install Linux with Dual Boot

1. Backup Your Data

Before you begin installing Linux, it's always best practice to back
up your important files. Changing system settings and
partitioning the hard drive can be risky, so ensuring that your data
is safe will give you peace of mind.

 Why Backup? Installing a new OS, resizing partitions, or


creating new ones involves modifying your disk structure.
Although these actions are usually safe if done correctly, they
can sometimes lead to data loss if something goes wrong.

 How to Backup? You can backup your files by copying them
to an external hard drive, cloud storage (like Google Drive or
Dropbox), or another partition on the same hard drive.

2. Prepare Your Disk

Next, you need to create free space on your disk for the Linux
installation. This will involve shrinking an existing partition (most
commonly the Windows partition) to make room for
Linux.Resizing Partitions (Windows): If you’re using Windows
and want to dual-boot with Linux, you’ll need to shrink your
Windows partition to free up space for Linux. Follow these steps:

a) Open Disk Management:


 Right-click on the Start button and select Disk
Management.
b) Shrink the Windows Partition:
 In Disk Management, find the partition where
Windows is installed (usually C:).
 Right-click on the Windows partition and select
Shrink Volume.
c) Allocate Space:
 Decide how much space to allocate for Linux (at
least 20-30 GB is recommended). Enter this amount
and click Shrink.
d) Unallocated Space:

 After shrinking, you will see Unallocated Space on
your disk. This space will be used for the Linux
installation.

3. Create a Bootable USB for Linux

You now need to create a bootable USB to install Linux. This


process involves downloading a Linux distribution and using
software to transfer it to a USB drive, making it bootable.

 Download Linux ISO: Go to the official website of your chosen


Linux distribution (e.g., Ubuntu, Kali Linux, Fedora) and
download the ISO file for your system (64-bit or 32-bit
depending on your machine).
o Example: Download Ubuntu from
https://ubuntu.com/download.
 Create a Bootable USB: Once you have the ISO, you need to
create a bootable USB stick. You can use tools like Rufus or
UNetbootin to do this.
a. Download Rufus: Go to https://rufus.ie/ and download
the latest version.
b. Prepare the USB Drive:
i. Insert a USB drive (at least 4GB in size).
ii. Open Rufus, select your USB drive, and choose the
downloaded ISO file.

iii. Make sure the partition scheme is set to GPT if your
system is UEFI-based, or MBR if your system is legacy
BIOS-based.
iv. Click Start to create the bootable USB.

4. Boot from USB

Now that you have a bootable USB, it’s time to boot your computer
from the USB drive to begin the installation of Linux.

 Insert the USB Drive: Plug the bootable USB into your
computer and restart it.
 Access the BIOS/UEFI Settings:
o To boot from the USB, you need to access your system’s
BIOS or UEFI settings.
o This is usually done by pressing a specific key during
startup, such as F2, F10, ESC, or DEL. The key varies
depending on the manufacturer of your system. You can
check your system's documentation or look for a
message that tells you which key to press for Boot
Options.
 Change Boot Order:
o Once inside the BIOS/UEFI settings, navigate to the Boot
menu.

o Set the USB device as the first boot option. Save and exit
the BIOS settings. Your system will restart and boot from
the USB stick.

5. Install Linux

Once your system boots into the Linux installer, you can begin the
installation process. The installer will guide you step-by-step
through the process.

 Choose Language and Keyboard Layout: Select your


preferred language and keyboard layout.
 Select Installation Type:
o The installer will offer you several options for
installation. To set up a dual boot, choose the option that
says Install Linux alongside Windows or Dual Boot.
o If you don’t see this option, you may need to select
Something Else, which lets you manually partition the
disk.
 Create Linux Partitions (if necessary):
o Root Partition: Create the root partition (/) where Linux
will be installed. This is the primary partition and should
be at least 15-20GB.
o Swap Partition: Create a swap partition (optional but
recommended). The swap partition is used as virtual
memory when your RAM is full. Typically, it should be

the size of your RAM (e.g., 4GB of RAM means a 4GB
swap).
o Home Partition (optional): If you want to keep your
personal files separate from the operating system files,
you can create a separate /home partition.

Example partitioning:

o / (root) – 20GB or more


o swap – equal to your RAM (e.g., 4GB swap)
o /home – 30GB or more (optional, but recommended for
separating personal data)
 Select Bootloader Location: The bootloader, usually GRUB,
will be installed on the master boot record (MBR) of your
primary disk (often /dev/sda). GRUB will allow you to choose
which operating system to boot into during startup.
 Finalize Installation:
o The installer will copy Linux files to your disk, install
necessary software, and set up system configurations.
o The process may take some time, depending on the speed
of your computer and the installation medium.

6. Set Up GRUB Bootloader

During the installation, Linux will automatically install GRUB


(Grand Unified Bootloader). GRUB is the program that manages
which operating system to boot when your system starts.

need to install additional software, updates, and drivers. It’s
always a good idea to:
o Run a system update (sudo apt update && sudo apt
upgrade on Ubuntu-based distributions).
o Install drivers for your hardware, such as graphics cards,
Wi-Fi, or printers (if necessary).

your system's hardware configuration. This includes verifying
your graphics card model and version, among other key hardware
components. You can use the following commands to gather
detailed information:

 To check system details:


 uname -a

This command provides basic information about your


system’s kernel version and architecture.

 To check your CPU details:


 lscpu

This will show you the CPU architecture, model, cores, and
other relevant information.

 To check the details of your graphics card:

This command lists the graphics cards connected to your


system. It will help you identify whether you're using an
NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel graphics card, which is important for
installing the correct drivers.

 For more detailed graphics card information:


 lshw -c video

This provides detailed information about your graphics card,


including the driver currently being used, the version, and
other related details.

 To check the installed drivers (useful for checking if you


already have a working driver):
 sudo lshw -C display

Once you've gathered the necessary information about your


hardware, you can move forward with the installation of drivers.

Before proceeding with the installation of any additional drivers,


make sure your system is up to date. This ensures that you have the
latest updates and patches, which is crucial for both system
stability and security.
