Language (0:06) Listening April 2024 (0:11) There are four parts to the
test. You will hear each part twice. (0:18) For each part of the test, there
will be time for you to look through the questions (0:24) and time for you
to check your answers.

Write your answers on the question paper. (0:32) The recording will now
be stopped. Please ask any questions now, (0:39) because you must not
speak during the test.

(0:46) Now open your question paper and look at part one. (0:54) There
are five questions in this part. (0:57) For each question, there are three
pictures and a short recording.

(1:02) Choose the correct picture and circle the letter A, B or C below
it. (1:13) Before we start, here is an example. Where is the girl's brother
now? (1:21) Is your brother still in bed, Mary? I know he likes to sleep late
in the mornings.

(1:28) He went out early, Grandad. Mum had some shopping to do and
she wanted him to help her. (1:34) Oh, he'll miss his basketball practice
then.

That's a shame. (1:41) The answer is B. (1:45) Look at the three pictures
for question one now. (1:52) Now we are ready to start.

Listen carefully. You will hear each recording twice. (2:02) One.

What will the weather be like later today? (2:08) Maybe we should forget
our bike ride later. It's not going to be very nice outside. (2:14) Oh, not
more rain.

It's been wet all week. (2:19) Well, it's getting colder. Actually, it said on
TV there'll definitely be snow this afternoon.
(2:26) Not good weather to be outside. Anyway, at least it isn't like
yesterday. (2:32) It was foggy when I drove to work.

I hate travelling in fog. Horrible. (2:41) Now listen again.

(2:44) Maybe we should forget our bike ride later. It's not going to be very
nice outside. (2:50) Oh, not more rain.

It's been wet all week. (2:54) Well, it's getting colder. Actually, it said on
TV there'll definitely be snow this afternoon.

(3:02) Not good weather to be outside. Anyway, at least it isn't like

yesterday. (3:08) It was foggy when I drove to work.

I hate travelling in fog. Horrible. (3:17) Two.

How did the boy find out about tonight's football practice? (3:24) Are you
going to football practice this evening? (3:28) Yeah, I nearly forgot about
it, but luckily my friend Tom reminded me. (3:34) Really? Did you talk to
him at school? I didn't think he was there today. (3:39) He called me
earlier, and he said he'd sent a text too, but I think I deleted that by
mistake.

(3:46) Right. Well, it's lucky he got in touch then. (3:52) Now listen again.

(3:55) Are you going to football practice this evening? (3:59) Yeah, I nearly
forgot about it, but luckily my friend Tom reminded me. (4:05) Really? Did
you talk to him at school? I didn't think he was there today. (4:10) He
called me earlier, and he said he'd sent a text too, but I think I deleted
that by mistake.

(4:17) Right. Well, it's lucky he got in touch then. (4:23) Three.

Which room is their lesson in today? (4:29) We'd better hurry up and get
to the math lesson. We're late, aren't we? (4:34) We are a bit, but there's
no heating in the math room, so we're off to the library instead. (4:41) Not
my favourite place, but at least there are computers there that we can
use.

(4:47) I'd really prefer to be in the IT room. Those computers are the best
in the school. (4:53) I know.

(4:57) Now listen again. (5:00) We'd better hurry up and get to the math
lesson. We're late, aren't we? (5:05) We are a bit, but there's no heating in
the math room, so we're off to the library instead.

(5:12) Not my favourite place, but at least there are computers there that
we can use. (5:18) I'd really prefer to be in the IT room. Those computers
are the best in the school.
(5:23) I know. (5:27) Four. Which activity doesn't the boy want to
do? (5:34) The summer camp just called to see which activities you'd like
to do.

(5:39) I wouldn't mind doing some more riding again. And maybe
something else. (5:44) Well, they've got diving.

That might be interesting. And there's rock climbing too. (5:50) I prefer
learning how to go up mountains.

I never enjoy any sport where I have to do any swimming. (5:59) Okay. I'll
let them know.

Now listen again. (6:07) The summer camp just called to see which
activities you'd like to do. (6:12) I wouldn't mind doing some more riding
again.

And maybe something else. (6:17) Well, they've got diving. That might be
interesting.

And there's rock climbing too. (6:24) I prefer learning how to go up

mountains. I never enjoy any sport where I have to do any swimming.

(6:31) Okay. I'll let them know. (6:37) Five.

Where does the girl want to go first? (6:43) We're nearly at the toy
museum. I hope you're excited. (6:46) I am, Dad.

I've saved £10 so I can't wait to buy something in the museum gift
shop. (6:54) And there's an amazing playground there too. (6:57) Right.

We'll leave enough time to do that after we've seen the

exhibition. (7:03) Oh, I'd prefer to play for a bit and then go and see stuff
in the museum. (7:08) Fine.

Now listen again. (7:14) We're nearly at the toy museum. I hope you're
excited.

(7:19) I am, Dad. I've saved £10 so I can't wait to buy something in the
museum gift shop. (7:25) And there's an amazing playground there too.

(7:28) Right. We'll leave enough time to do that after we've seen the
exhibition. (7:34) Oh, I'd prefer to play for a bit and then go and see stuff
in the museum.

(7:39) Fine. That is the end of part one. (7:49) Now turn to part two,
questions six to ten.

(7:55) For each question, circle the correct answer, A, B or C. (8:03) You
now have 20 seconds to look at the questions for part two. (8:28) Now we
are ready to start. (8:32) Listen carefully.
You will hear the recording twice. (8:38) Six. You will hear a girl talking
about taking photos.

(8:45) What is most important to her? (8:48) A. Improving as a

photographer. (8:52) B. Finding new things to take photos of. (8:57) C.
Sharing her photos with others.

(9:04) You take great photos, Sandra. (9:07) Thanks. I worry when I show
them to my friends.

(9:11) They must think they're boring because they're only of

wildflowers. (9:15) Maybe I'll try something new. But for now, (9:19) it's
the best way for me to see if I'm actually getting any better at using light
and colour.

(9:24) And I really need to know. If I took pictures of lots of other things,
I'd never find out. (9:33) Now listen again.

(9:36) You take great photos, Sandra. (9:39) Thanks. I worry when I show
them to my friends.

(9:42) They must think they're boring because they're only of

wildflowers. (9:47) Maybe I'll try something new. But for now, (9:50) it's
the best way for me to see if I'm actually getting any better at using light
and colour.

(9:56) And I really need to know. If I took pictures of lots of other things,
I'd never find out. (10:05) 7. You will hear two friends discussing how
scientists live on the International Space Station.

(10:15) What does the girl think would be the biggest problem about
it? (10:20) A. Finding enough things to do. (10:24) B. Having very little
room to live in. (10:29) C. Being with the same people all the time.

(10:37) What are you reading? (10:39) An article about scientists on the
International Space Station hundreds of miles above Earth. (10:46) I'm not
sure I'd change places with them, always being in such a small
space. (10:52) But not seeing anyone new for ages would be even more
difficult.

(10:57) You'd be busy doing experiments and stuff. (11:00) So you

wouldn't be spending hours doing nothing. (11:06) Now listen again.

(11:09) What are you reading? (11:12) An article about scientists on the
International Space Station hundreds of miles above Earth. (11:19) I'm not
sure I'd change places with them, always being in such a small
space. (11:25) But not seeing anyone new for ages would be even more
difficult.
(11:30) You'd be busy doing experiments and stuff. (11:33) So you
wouldn't be spending hours doing nothing. (11:39) 8. You will hear two
friends talking about a musician.

(11:45) What do they disagree about? (11:49) A. Her music style has
changed recently. (11:54) B. Her new album is the best. (11:58) C. Her
music videos are always interesting.

(12:07) Have you seen Milo Starr's latest music video yet? (12:10) It's
brilliant. (12:12) Yeah, it's her best one so far. (12:14) Her other ones are a
bit dull.

(12:17) I can't believe you're saying that. (12:19) They're all

unforgettable. (12:21) What do you think about her last album? (12:23) I
can't stop playing it.

(12:25) Every song's really different and very powerful. (12:28) I

know. (12:29) It's my favorite album.

(12:34) Now listen again. (12:37) Have you seen Milo Starr's latest music
video yet? (12:40) It's brilliant. (12:42) Yeah, it's her best one so far.

(12:44) Her other ones are a bit dull. (12:46) I can't believe you're saying
that. (12:49) They're all unforgettable.

(12:50) What do you think about her last album? (12:53) I can't stop
playing it. (12:55) Every song's really different and very powerful. (12:58) I
know.

(12:59) It's my favorite album. (13:04) 9. You will hear two students
talking about a book they have read. (13:10) What do the students both
think about it? (13:14) A. The locations were not realistic.

(13:19) B. The characters were very unpleasant. (13:24) C. The ending

was difficult to understand. (13:32) Did you enjoy that book,
Blackbird? (13:34) I couldn't work out what happened at the end.

(13:38) Oh, I thought the last chapter explained everything. (13:42) For
me, it was the people in it. (13:44) They were so awful I nearly stopped
reading.

(13:46) I didn't like them at all, but I carried on (13:50) because the
villages where it all happened were described so well. (13:54) But nobody
actually lives in places like that. (14:00) Now listen again.

(14:03) Did you enjoy that book, Blackbird? (14:06) I couldn't work out
what happened at the end. (14:09) Oh, I thought the last chapter
explained everything. (14:13) For me, it was the people in it.
(14:15) They were so awful I nearly stopped reading. (14:18) I didn't like
them at all, but I carried on (14:22) because the villages where it all
happened were described so well. (14:25) But nobody actually lives in
places like that.

(14:32) 10. You will hear a boy talking to his grandma about
cooking. (14:39) What will they do first? (14:42) A. Read some
instructions.

(14:46) B. Go to the supermarket. (14:50) C. Wash the

dishes. (14:56) Grandma, can you teach me how to bake a cake
sometime? (15:00) How about now, before I do the dishes? (15:03) I'll help
you do that later.

(15:05) So, can we make a chocolate cake? (15:08) Well, we'd have to buy
chocolate, (15:11) but I'm sure I've got everything we need for a
strawberry one. (15:15) Have a look in this cookbook and see what it
says. (15:19) We can always go to the supermarket if we haven't.

(15:23) Okay. (15:27) Now listen again. (15:30) Grandma, can you teach
me how to bake a cake sometime? (15:34) How about now, before I do the
dishes? (15:38) I'll help you do that later.

(15:40) So, can we make a chocolate cake? (15:42) Well, we'd have to buy
chocolate, (15:45) but I'm sure I've got everything we need for a
strawberry one. (15:50) Have a look in this cookbook and see what it
says. (15:54) We can always go to the supermarket if we haven't.

(15:57) Okay. (16:01) That is the end of part two. (16:07) Now turn to part
three, questions eleven to fifteen.

(16:13) You will hear a boy called Max telling his class (16:17) about a
group trip he went on with his family. (16:22) For each question, fill in the
missing information in the numbered space. (16:29) You now have twenty
seconds to look at the questions for part three.

(16:55) Now we are ready to start. (16:58) Listen carefully. (16:59) You will
hear the recording twice.

(17:04) I'm Max, and I'm here to tell you about my trip with my
family (17:07) to find out more about the night sky. (17:10) We joined a
group with a leader called Harry. (17:13) We were originally supposed to
meet the group on top of a tower near the town, (17:17) but so many
people booked to go, there wasn't enough space.

(17:21) So instead, we got together on a beach not too far from the town
where we live. (17:27) We could see really clearly from there, (17:29) and
it was probably safer than on a nearby cliff, although that was
higher. (17:35) First, Harry told us about the moon.

(17:37) I guess everyone's heard about astronauts going to the

moon, (17:41) but I don't think many people, including me, knew there
were mountains there. (17:46) It was amazing to find out about them, and
I got a good view of the moon (17:50) because there were very few clouds
around that evening. (17:53) Then, Harry showed us some important stars
in the night sky.

(17:57) One of them, called Rigel, was really old. (18:01) I'll spell that for
you in case you want to look online. (18:03) It's spelled R-I-G-E-L.

(18:09) Harry told us it's brighter than the sun. (18:12) I was also hoping
to see some animals. (18:14) I've seen some birds when I've been there
before, though they mostly come out during the day.

(18:19) So I was really excited when a few bats flew past, (18:23) just
before we left for home because we didn't see anything else. (18:27) We'd
expected to see foxes during the evening, but they didn't
appear. (18:32) There'll be another event like this soon.

(18:35) You can buy tickets in advance. (18:37) It costs $4.60 for adults,
but there are student discounts. (18:42) So my brother and I had a great
evening for $2.50 each, (18:47) and it only costs $1.20 for younger
children.

(18:54) Now listen again. (18:57) I'm Max, and I'm here to tell you about
my trip with my family (19:01) to find out more about the night
sky. (19:03) We joined a group with a leader called Harry.

(19:06) We were originally supposed to meet the group on top of a tower

near the town, (19:11) but so many people booked to go, there wasn't
enough space. (19:15) So instead, we got together on a beach not too far
from the town where we live. (19:20) We could see really clearly from
there, (19:22) and it was probably safer than on a nearby cliff, although
that was higher.

(19:28) First, Harry told us about the moon. (19:31) I guess everyone's
heard about astronauts going to the moon, (19:34) but I don't think many
people, including me, knew there were mountains there. (19:39) It was
amazing to find out about them, and I got a good view of the
moon (19:44) because there were very few clouds around that evening.

(19:47) Then, Harry showed us some important stars in the night

sky. (19:51) One of them, called Rigel, was really old. (19:54) I'll spell that
for you in case you want to look online.
(19:56) It's spelled R-I-G-E-L. (20:02) Harry told us it's brighter than the
sun. (20:05) I was also hoping to see some animals.

(20:08) I've seen some birds when I've been there before, (20:10) though
they mostly come out during the day. (20:13) So I was really excited when
a few bats flew past, (20:17) just before we left for home because we
didn't see anything else. (20:21) We'd expected to see foxes during the
evening, but they didn't appear.

(20:26) There'll be another event like this soon. (20:28) You can buy
tickets in advance. (20:31) It costs $4.60 for adults, but there are student
discounts.

(20:36) So my brother and I had a great evening for $2.50

each, (20:41) and it only costs $1.20 for younger children. (20:48) That is
the end of part three. (20:54) Now turn to part four, questions 16 to 20.

(21:00) You will hear an interview with a girl called Sylvia (21:04) who is
talking about her hobby, climbing on an indoor climbing wall. (21:11) For
each question, circle the correct answer A, B or C. (21:19) You now have
20 seconds to look at the questions for part four. (21:44) Now we are
ready to start.

(21:47) Listen carefully. (21:49) You will hear the recording

twice. (21:53) On our programme today, I'm talking to Sylvia
Webb (21:57) who goes climbing on an indoor climbing wall.

(22:01) Now, Sylvia, what made you start climbing? (22:05) Well, before I
started climbing, (22:08) I didn't think of myself as a really sporty
person, (22:12) although I've always enjoyed cycling and
swimming. (22:15) But it was something new that none of my friends had
done. (22:19) I watched people doing indoor climbing on TV and decided
to have a go.

(22:25) Can you remember your first climbing session? (22:28) Yes, I
remember looking up at the wall and thinking how high it was (22:33) and
feeling slightly nervous. (22:36) But I was attached to a rope and there
were mats on the ground, (22:40) so I knew if I came off, I'd be
fine. (22:43) I set off up the wall and nearly got to the top.

(22:47) I couldn't believe it, but it still didn't stop me being a bit
frightened. (22:53) And what do you like about climbing? (22:56) I think
it's nice to do something different after studying all day. (23:01) It's taught
me how to focus only on what I'm doing at that moment too.

(23:06) That's the best thing as I wasn't very good at that

before. (23:10) And it's only when you stop that you realise how much
energy it takes, (23:15) so it's great for getting fit. (23:18) So why has
climbing become so popular, do you think? (23:22) Well, the climbing
centre I go to certainly gets busy (23:26) and at weekends there are even
contests to see who the best climbers are.

(23:32) It feels very welcoming. (23:34) The instructors are

nice. (23:36) I'm not sure every centre's like that though, but you can
choose how you climb.

(23:42) Go up the wall with your mates or do it by yourself. (23:45) That's

why people find it enjoyable. (23:48) And what's useful to take when you
go? (23:52) I took a helmet the first time I went.

(23:54) I've since discovered that's only necessary when you're rock
climbing outdoors. (23:59) I've thought about buying expensive shoes to
climb in. (24:03) Those would probably help, although I'm managing fine
with normal trainers for now.

(24:09) It's best to wear things you can move easily in

though, (24:12) otherwise you'll never reach the top of the
wall. (24:19) Now listen again. (24:21) On our programme today, I'm
talking to Sylvia Webb, (24:25) who goes climbing on an indoor climbing
wall.

(24:29) Now, Sylvia, what made you start climbing? (24:33) Well, before I

(26:50) Please stop writing now. (26:52) Your supervisor will now collect all
the question papers.
