Good

Afternoon!
Convince Me !
Instructions:
 The class will be grouped into three with
more or less 10 members each.
 This activity will test your reasoning skills by
convincing the judge through your own
reasons based on the situation and the topic
assigned to you.
 The teacher will provide three sets of
situations wherein all the groups will take
turns to be the judge and at the same time
as participants.

Convince Me !
Instructions:
 For example, on the first situation, group 1 will be
the judge and the remaining two groups will be
the one to execute or give their reasons.
 For every situation, each group will only be given
30 seconds to brainstorm. After brainstorming,
another 30 seconds will be given one
speaker/representative to convince the judges by
giving their own reasons.
 After all the speakers have given their reasons,
the judge will give their judgment based on the
materials and the reasons presented by each
group.

SITUATION # 1
Mon wants to have a movie date with her family,
which genre do you think is better to watch?

GROUP 1- Will be the judge.

GROUP 2- Horror Movies.
GROUP 3- Romantic Movies.
SITUATION #2
Li is craving for sweets, which is
better for him to eat?

Group 1- Fruits.
Group 2- Chocolates.

SITUATION #3
Mar wants to go on a vacation, which
tourist destination is better for her to go?
GROUP 1- Palawan.
GROUP 2- Will be the judge.
GROUP 3- Boracay.

What did you feel while doing the
activity?
How did you come up with
those reasons?
How were you able to make
sound judgment?
What do you think is the key components of
having an effective reasoning or judgment?
LESSON 9:
CRITICAL READING AND
CRITICAL REASONING.
Instructor: Ms. Princess Joy T. Castillo
What is reading?

Reading is a cognitive process

of decoding symbols to derive
meaning from a text.
THREE READING
STRATEGIES

PREVIEWING SKIMMING SCANNING

THREE READING STRATEGIES
Previewing – It is looking at the
readily visible parts of the text. It
familiarizes you with the contents of
the selection and focus on the
important information in the texts.
THREE READING STRATEGIES

Skimming- You look for the

main point of the reading and
identify the ideas that develop it.
THREE READING STRATEGIES

Scanning- It is looking for a

specific information, this strategy
involves physically moving eyes
quickly along the lines of the text.
What is Critical Reading.
Critical reading means engaging in what you read by
asking yourself questions such as, “what is the author
trying to say?” or “what is the main argument being
presented?”.
Critical reading is a process of analyzing, interpreting
and, sometimes, evaluating. In academic sense it
means you are advancing your understanding.
When you read critically you don’t only read something
on a literal level, you go higher as your
understanding towards the text goes deeper.
Have you ever read a magazine,
article, newspaper editorial or a
piece of advertising and found
yourself questioning the claims of
the authors?
Have you ever read a magazine, article,
newspaper editorial or a piece of advertising and
found yourself questioning the claims of the
authors?
 When we read critically, we use our critical
thinking skills to QUESTION both the text and our
own reading/perspective of it.
 You look beneath the surface of the words and
think about their meaning and significance.
 You make judgements based on careful analysis
and sound reasoning.
Why do we need to consider
reading critically?
Why Read Critically?
Critical reading leads to critical thinking. In other
words, instead of blindly accepting what is written on a
page, you separate yourself from the text and decide for
yourself what is or is not important or logical or right. And
you do so because you bring to your reading your own
perspective, experience, education and personal
values, as well as your powers of comprehension and
analysis.
How can you practice or apply your
critical thinking skills as a student?
Critical reading is a more
ACTIVE way of reading.
You discover where an author stands on an
issue; you discover the strengths and
weaknesses of the author’s argument and
you decide which side outweighs the other.
The end result is that you have a better
understanding of the issue.
What is Critical Thinking?
 Critical thinking is when you think analytically,
judgmentally, selectively and make choices.
 It is the ability of someone to defend something by giving
out reasons.
 Reasoning is a process of ideas as well as justifying a
stand based on existing knowledge and experiences.
 To think critically is to question the world and thus to
engage critically with the possibilities and alternatives which
the world offers.
CRITICAL READING VS
CRITICAL THINKING
Critical reading is a technique for discovering
information and ideas within a text while critical
thinking is technique for evaluating information
and ideas, for deciding what to accept and
believe.
 Critical reading and Critical thinking work
together.
 First you read critically and then think critically.
How does a man prove himself
different or superior compared to
the others surrounding him?
The following are the different critical reading skills enumerated by
prentice hall:

Critical Reading Skills.

 The ability to distinguish between fact and opinion.
 The ability to identify the author’s purpose.
 The ability to make inferences.
Example: A character has a diaper in her hand, spit-up on her
shirt, and a bottle warming on the counter. You can infer that
this character is a ________
Critical reading Skills

The ability to recognize the

author’s tone.
CRITICAL READING SKILLS

The ability to recognize

persuasive techniques.
Therefore, a critical reader requires various skills when
reading a text. Critical reading ultimately examines
the author’s choice of content, language and
structure. To read critically is to make judgments as to
how a text are viewed. Reading critically means you
are thinking critically and you must question what you
are reading.
STEPS IN DOING CRITICAL
READING?
1. First determine the central claims or purpose
of the text (its thesis).

Critical reading attempts to identify and assess

how these central claims are employed or argued.
STEPS IN DOING CRITICAL
READING?
2. Begin to make some judgments about context

 You may ask yourself the following questions:

“what audience is a text written for?” “who is
it in dialogue with?” “in what historical
context is it written?” all these matters
contribute to the assessment of what is going on
in a text
STEPS IN DOING CRITICAL
READING
3. Distinguish the kinds of reasoning the text
employs.

You may ask yourself the question: “what

concepts are defined and used?” the reader
might also examine how the text is organized is
like asking the question how was the author
analyzed or broken down the material.
STEPS IN DOING CRITICAL
READING
4. Examine the evidence (the supporting facts, etc. the text
employs)
 Supporting evidence is indispensable to an argument, you may ask
yourself the following questions like: “what counts as evidence in
this argument?” “Is this evidence statistical, literary or
historical?” “From what sources is the evidence taken or are
these sources primary or secondary?”
STEPS IN DOING CRITICAL
READING

5. Critical Reading may involve evaluation.

Your reading is critical if it accounts for and
makes a series of judgments about how a
text are used.
Always remember that when you do critical
reading, you do analysis of the text which
inquire you to formulate good reasoning using
proofs or evidences.
ACTIVITY
A. Instructions: Read the award winning short story of Manuel Arguilla “How
My Brother Leon Brought Home a Wife.” This can be searched online.

B. Instructions: Answer the following questions using critical thinking.

1. What do you imagine when someone from the city or a new member of the
family would look like and smell like? How would he act, talk and think?
2. How would you describe a person who comes from different background?
Would you like or dislike that person? Why?
3. In the story, how did they receive the new wife
4. How did the new wife react to the provincial way of life?
5. If you were in Leon’s shoes, what type of wife/husband would you choose?
Describe and ideal wife or husband that you can present to your family when
you reach the right age to marry.
As a Monlimarian, how can you
convince someone or your fellow
student to practice their critical
reading, and what advice would
you give to him\her to start
redirecting their ways in
developing their thinking skills?
How does critical reading help
you establish comprehensive
academic analysis?
How does critical reading as a
form of reasoning can be useful
in your daily life?

ASSIGNMENT
List five sources of news information.
Number them from 1-5, 1 being the
least reliable and 5 the most reliable.
Give reasons for your answer.
Thank you and Be
happy!
