Databases On International Literature

This page offers a variety of literature databases from around the world, which can be accessed freely from the Library building or from home.

In addition to the databases listed on this page, literature-related materials can also be found in other databases that require a paid subscription for access. More information can be obtained from the library staff.

Archive of Western Esoterica This database contains encyclopedic and bibliographic information, as well as full texts, on the Western traditions of magic and esotericism. While the database focuses on literature from the Renaissance and early modern period, it also includes information from the Middle Ages and antiquity. Database of Award-Winning Children's Literature A database documenting award-winning children's literature, including records of approximately 17,000 books, the awards they have received, and additional cataloging and bibliographic information. English
DOAJ: Directory of Open-Source Journals A search engine for open-access academic journals and articles in the fields of literature and the humanities, providing full-text access to tens of thousands of publications. The system includes advanced filtering options. Multiple languages
Gallica Digital Library A multidisciplinary database of the National Library of France, containing approximately 10 million items, including a comprehensive collection of French literature throughout the history of the language. French, English
Internet Shakespeare Editions This database consolidates the complete works of William Shakespeare—both in the realm of poetry and drama—and provides rich resources related to the historical and biographical aspects of his life. In addition to the full texts, the database includes academic editions for some of the plays, featuring in-depth interpretations, scholarly footnotes, and references to leading research sources. Librivox This database offers a rich collection of tens of thousands of public domain audiobooks, providing free access and unlimited downloads. Most of the books are in English, but books in a variety of other languages can also be found. Multiple languages
Luminarium: Anthology of English Literature A comprehensive anthology of English literature, spanning from the early Middle Ages to the late nineteenth century. The collection presents full texts of masterpieces, along with in-depth encyclopedic and academic studies that examine the works, the background of their creators, and provides historical sources that offer rich cultural and period context for the entire body of works. Mark Twain Project Online A database containing the complete works of the American author Mark Twain – including novels, travel books, his autobiography, as well as letters and other personal writings. Currently in beta version. English
National Central Library Rare Books & Special Collections Database A comprehensive collection of Chinese literature on various topics, from the National Library of Taiwan. The database primarily focuses on ancient Chinese literature. Chinese
Open Humanities Press A collection of peer-reviewed journals and books on a wide range of topics, with an emphasis on the humanities. All journals and books were submitted voluntarily and are freely accessible. Multiple languages
Perseus Digital Library An open-access database from Tufts University, offering a comprehensive view of the Greco-Roman world. The site features an extensive collection of primary and secondary texts, complemented by a rich visual collection of thousands of art and history artifacts, including buildings, coins, and sculptures. Project Gutenberg A database containing approximately 75,000 public domain eBooks. All books are available for online viewing or download in various digital formats, free of charge and without registration. The collection includes fiction, nonfiction, history, science, and more. Multiple languages
The Chicago Homer A database compiling all the works of Homer. The database allows full-text search in both Greek and English, with various advanced search options (search by word type, search within the narrative or text only and more). It is freely accessible. English, Greek
The Online Books Page Database containing links to approximately three million books available for free reading, covering a wide range of subjects and languages, with an emphasis on literature. It also includes various collections and links to databases in multiple languages. Multiple languages
The Science Fiction and Fantasy Research Database A free index featuring approximately 150,000 records and bibliographic entries in the fields of science fiction and fantasy, along with horror literature and other genres. The database includes records from official magazines, among other sources. English
The Victorian Web Provides a comprehensive overview of 19th-century British history and literature. The site is divided into sections covering political, social, and economic history. Additional sections explore topics such as gender, philosophy, religion, science, technology, style and technique, authors, visual art, and Victorian design. English
World Digital Library The Library of Congress World Literature Collection includes a wide range of texts in various formats, such as books, manuscripts, and legal documents. The collection was established in collaboration with UNESCO. Multiple languages
Zenon This database includes a wide range of books, journals, and additional online resources in the field of Classical Studies. Most materials are freely accessible from home, while some require registration. Additionally, the database provides links to other relevant databases for each topic in the field.
