13.9 Indicative Syllabus (Tier-I):
13.9.1 Tier-I: General Intelligence & Reasoning: It would include
questions of both verbal and non-verbal type. This component may include
questions on analogies, similarities and differences, space visualization,
spatial orientation, problem solving, analysis, judgment, decision making,
visual memory, discrimination, observation, relationship concepts,
arithmetical reasoning and figural classification, arithmetic number series,
non-verbal series, coding and decoding, statement conclusion, syllogistic
reasoning etc. The topics are, Semantic Analogy, Symbolic/Number Analogy,
Figural Analogy, Semantic Classification, Symbolic/Number Classification,
Figural Classification, Semantic Series, Number Series, Figural Series,
Problem Solving, Word Building, Coding & de-coding, Numerical
Operations, symbolic Operations, Trends, Space Orientation, Space
Visualization, Venn Diagrams, Drawing inferences, Punched hole/ pattern
folding& un-folding, Figural Pattern-folding and completion, Indexing.
Address matching, Date & city matching, Classification of centre codes/roll
numbers, Small & Capital letters/numbers coding, decoding and classification,
Embedded Figures, Critical thinking, Emotional Intelligence, Social
Intelligence.
13.9.2 General Awareness: Questions in this component will be aimed
at testing the candidates' general awareness of the environment around him
and its application to society. Questions will also be designed to test
knowledge of current events and of such matters of every day observations
and experience in their scientific aspect as may be expected of any educated
person. The test will also include questions relating to India and its
neighboring countries especially pertaining History. Culture, Geography.
Economic Scene, General Policy & Scientific Research.
13.9.3 Quantitative Aptitude: The questions will be designed to test
the ability of appropriate use of numbers and number sense of the candidate.
The scope of the test will be computation of whole numbers, decimals,
fractions and relationships between numbers, Percentage. Ratio & Proportion,
Square roots, Averages, Interest, Profit and Loss, Discount, Partnership
Business, Mixture and Alligation, Time and distance, Time & Work, Basic
algebraic identities of School Algebra & Elementary surds, Graphs of Linear
Equations, Triangle and its various kinds of centres, Congruence and
similarity of triangles, Circle and its chords, tangents, angles subtended by
chords of a circle, common tangents to two or more circles, Triangle,
Quadrilaterals, Regular Polygons, Circle, Right Prism, Right Circular Cone,
Right Circular Cylinder, Sphere, Hemispheres, Rectangular Parallelepiped,
Regular Right Pyramid with triangular or square base, Trigonometric ratio,
Degree and Radian Measures, Standard Identities, Complementary angles,
Heights and Distances, Histogram, Frequency polygon, Bar diagram & Pie
chart.

NOTE: Candidates should note that in case a communication is received from their employer, by the RRB
concerned, withholding permission to the candidates applying for/appearing in the examination, their
application/candidature will be liable to be rejected /cancelled.
.0 RECRUITMENT PROCESS:
(a) Candidates should apply only through online mode through the official websites of any RRBs. Candidates can
apply to only one RRB and only one common online application (in order of preference for any all the
notified posts). The selection of RRB once exercised shall be final. Application to more than one RRB by a
candidate will lead to rejection of all the applications.
(b) The recruitment process shall comprise of the following stages:
(i) 1 Stage Computer Based Test (CBT-)
(ü) 2nd Stage Computer Based Test (CBT-11)
(iii) Document Verification (DV)
(iv) Medical Examination (ME)
(c) Information on examination schedule and venues will be given to eligible candidates in due course through
RRB websites, SMS and/or email.
(d) Request for postponement of any of the stages or for change of venue, date and shift will not be entertained
under any circumstances.

Assumptions etc.
C. General Awareness:
Knowledge of Current affairs, Indian geography, culture and history of India including freedom struggle, Indian
Polity and constitution, Indian Economy, Environmental issues concerning India and the World, Sports, General
Scientific and technological developments etc.
d. General Science:
Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences (up to 10h Standard CBSE syllabus). The section wise Number of questions

The section wise distribution given in the above table is only indicative and there may be some variations in
the actual question papers.
ii Minimum percentage of marks for eligibility in various categories: UR-40%, EWS-40%, OBC-30%, SC-30%,
ST -25%. These percentage of marks for eligibility may be relaxed by 2% for PwBD candidates in case of
shortage of PwBD candidates against vacancies reserved for them.

14.7.1 Numerical and Mathematical Ability: It will include questions on
problems relating to Integers and Whole Numbers, LCM and HCF,
Decimals and Fractions, Relationship between numbers, Fundamental
Arithmetic Operations and BODMAS, Percentage, Ratio and
Proportions, Work and Time, Direct and inverse Proportions, Averages,
Simple Interest, Profit and Loss, Discount, Area and Perimeter of Basic
Geometric Figures, Distance and Time, Lines and Angles, Interpretation
of simple Graphs and Data, Square and Square roots etc.
14.7.2 Reasoning Ability and Problemn Solving: The questions in this part
intend to measure the candidates' general learning ability. The
questions will be broadly based on Alpha-Numeric Series, Coding and
Decoding, Analogy, Following Directions, Similarities and Differences,
Jumbling, Problem Solving and Analysis, Non-verbal Reasoning based
on diagrams, age Calculations, Calendar and Clock, etc.
14.7.3 General Awareness: The broad coverage of the test will be on Social
Studies (History, Geography, Art and Culture, Civics, Economics),
General Science and Environmental studies up to 10th Standard.
14.7.4 English Language and Comprehension: Candidates' understanding of
the basics of English Language, its vocabulary, grammar, sentence
structure, synonyms, antonyms and its correct usage, etc. and to test
comprehension, a simple paragraph may be given and question based

(a) CBT-1 will only be a screening exam for shortlisting eligible candidates for CBT-2 based on their

Statistics, Square Root, Age Calculations, Calendar &Clock, Pipes & Cistern etc.
(B) Mental Ability: Analogies, Alphabetical and Number Series, Coding and Decoding.

Interpretation and Sufficiency, Conclusions and Decision Making, Similarities and

(C) General Science: The syllabus under this shall cover Physics, Chemistry and Life
Sciences of 10th standard level.
(D) General Awareness: Curent affairs, science & technoogy. sports, culture,
personalities, economics, politics and other subject of importance.
12.2 SECOND STAGE CBT (CBT-2):
(a) Shortlisting of candidates for CBT-2 shall be done RRB-wise and community-wise as per their
normalized marks and merit in CBT-1.
(b) Total number of candidates to be shortlisted for CBT-2 shall be limited to 15 (fifteen) times the
number of vacancies notified against each RRB.
(c) However, Railways reserve the right to increase Idecrease the above limit as required, to ensure
availability of adequate number of candidates for the notified post.
(d) The final panels for ALP will be prepared only on the basis of marks and merit of candidates in CBT-2
&CBAT.
(e) Pattern &Syllabus of CBT-2:
(i) CBT-2 shall comprise oftwo parts viz., Part-A and Part-B as detailed below.
(ü) Total Duration: 2 hours and 30 minutes &Total Questions: 175
Part-A: 90 minutes & 100 questions
Part-B:60 minutes &75 questions
(ii) There shall be negative marking @1/3rd marks for each wrong answer.
(iv) Normalization of marks will be done for CBTs held in multiple shifts.
(v) In Part -A, Minimum pass percentage for eligibility: UR & EWs- 40%, OBC (NCL)-30%,SC -
30%, ST-25%.
(vi) Only the marks scored in Part-A shall be counted for shortlisting of candidates for
further stages of this recruitment process provided the candidate irrespective of
community is able to secure qualifying marks (35%) in Part-B.
(vii) SYLLABUS for Part-A:
(A) Mathematics: Number system, BODMAS, Decimals, Fractions, LCM, HCF, Ratio and Proportion,
Percentages, Mensuration, Time and Work; Time and Distance, Simple and Compound Interest, Profit
Loss, Algebra,

(vil) SYLLABUS for Part-B:
(A) Part-B is only a qualifying test in nature and shall have questions from the various trade syllabi as
prescribed by Directorate Generalof Training (DGT).
(B) Note: Qualifying Percentage- 35% for all candidates irrespective of categorylcommunity.
(C) Syllabus of Various Trades: Please check the website (https:lldgt.gov.in.) of Directorate General of
Training (GOI) for syllabi of different technical trades.
(D) Candidates with ITITrade Apprenticeship qualification will be required to appear in the section having
questions from their trade.
(E) Degree, Diploma candidates have to select one trade from the list of trades listed below against their
engineering discipline.
