CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

The University of Santo Tomas-Legazpi (UST-Legazpi), previously

known as Aquinas University of Legazpi, has been a cornerstone of higher
education in the Bicol Region since its establishment. As an affiliate of the
esteemed University of Santo Tomas in Manila, UST-Legazpi maintains a
tradition of academic excellence, guided by its mission to cultivate capable,
compassionate, and Christ-centered individuals. Throughout the years, the
university has played a significant role in shaping the intellectual and moral
landscape of its community, offering a diverse array of programs to meet
the varied needs of its students.

UST-Legazpi is currently facing new challenges and opportunities. The

increasing demands of a globalized world, alongside rapid technological
advancements, have prompted universities to reevaluate their approaches
to education. For UST-Legazpi, this entails improving its facilities,
curriculum, and overall student experience to remain competitive and
pertinent. A well-designed student center not only offers spaces for
studying and socializing but also fosters a sense of community and
belonging among students.

This study aims to delve into how UST-Legazpi can optimize the student
center to better serve the needs of its expanding student population. The
research will evaluate the existing facilities, gather input from students and
staff, and analyze trends in student center design to propose
recommendations that are in line with the university’s mission and vision.
By concentrating on the student center, this research strives to contribute
to UST-Legazpi's ongoing endeavors to enhance the quality of education
and student life on campus.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The student center is a vital part of any university campus, serving as the
heart of student life. It offers a versatile space for studying, socializing,
participating in extracurricular activities, and accessing various services.
The design and functionality of a student center can significantly impact the
overall student experience, influencing academic performance, social
engagement, and community building. A student center is a dedicated
space for student activities, fostering a sense of community among
students, instructors, and staff. It provides areas for casual conversations,
allowing people to meet and form bonds outside of the classroom. This
social component is essential for creating a welcoming campus community.

UST Legazpi prioritizes holistic student formation, including academic

excellence, moral integrity, and emotional maturity. The Student Center will
align with this mission by offering resources and spaces that promote well-
being, collaboration, and cultural exchange among students. The center
will support a variety of events and programs to facilitate professional and
personal growth by providing a designated location for students. The
proposed Student center must host a variety of activities, from social
events and gatherings to studying and group projects. Priority should be
given to flexible areas that can be used for various purposes.

The University of Santo Tomas Legazpi's student center was initially

designed to accommodate a smaller and less diverse student population.
However, with substantial growth in enrollment and the diversity of its
student, there is now overcrowding, inadequate facilities, and a lack of
spaces that cater to the evolving needs of students. They must provide
environments that support academic success, foster social connections,
and reflect the cultural and social diversity of the student population. This
involves incorporating sustainable design principles, ensuring accessibility
for all students, and integrating technology to enhance the functionality of
the space.

The decision to build a university student center is often driven by

increasing student enrollment, changing student needs, and the desire to
remain competitive with other institutions. For the University of Santo
Tomas Legazpi, the current small accommodation no longer meets the
demands of its growing and diverse student population. There is a clear
need to reassess the design and functionality of this facility to better align
with the university’s goals and the needs of its students.
This study aims to explore the factors driving the need for a new student
center at the University of Santo Tomas Legazpi. By examining the limitations
of the current facility, assessing the needs and expectations of the student
body, and reviewing trends in student center design, this research will provide
insights into how a new student center can be designed to better serve the
university community. The study will also consider the broader impact of such
a facility on student engagement, academic success, and campus culture.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study determined the appropriate design of Student Center and sought
answers to the following questions/problems.
1. What are the main reasons students visiting the student center, and how
frequently do they use it?
2. What are the facilities to be used on designing University Student Center?
3. What design approach and solutions can be used in order to meet the need
requirement of this project?

PROJECT OBJECTIVE

The primary objective of this paper is to enhance the understanding of

the essential guidelines necessary to reestablish a connection between the
student and nature. In pursuit of this aim, the paper delineates the following
procedural objectives:

1. To offer an area inside the university where students can gather,

collaborate, and engage in various academic, cultural, and social activities
in line with the university’s goals and objectives.
2. To serve as an avenue for student life, promoting a sense of community,
enhancing student engagement, and supporting student well-being.
3. To integrate the concept of Sustainable Design Solutions and energy-
efficient systems to minimize environmental impact.
4. To design an innovative and functional student center and promote the
identity of the university.
SIGNIFICANT OF THE PROJECT

Primary Users
The primary users of the University Student Center are the students. The
concept is ideal for them because they are involved in different activities. A
well-designed student center can significantly enhance students' academic
experiences by offering spaces that promote collaboration, learning, and
personal development.

Secondary Users
The Second users are the administrators and instructors. An improved
student center provides instructors with additional spaces that support
various teaching and learning activities outside the traditional classroom
setting. the availability of modernized facilities for academic workshops,
seminars, and extracurricular activities can complement instructors' efforts
to provide a well-rounded educational experience.

Tertiary Users
The security and control staff, maintenance staff, and support staff are
considered tertiary users. They are the employees who provide support
and additional services for the student center.

PROJECT SCOPE AND LIMITATION

This proposal focused on designed and planning Student Center. This

included the design concept, design considerations, space requirements and
the site development plan. The architectural design of proposed project is
given more emphasis in this study. The management operation or financial
aspect and some executive matters are not part of this proposal.

Project: San Diego Convention Center

Location: San Diego, California

Architect: Arthur Erickson

San Diego Convention Center is the primary convention center in San

Diego, California. It is located in the Marina district of downtown San Diego
near the Gaslamp Quarter, at 111 West Harbor Drive. The center is managed
by the San Diego Convention Center Corporation, a non-profit public benefit
corporation.

ThThe convention center offers 615,700 sq. ft. (57,200 m²) of exhibit space. As
of 2009 it was the 24th largest convention facility in North America. It was
designed by Canadian architect Arthur Erickson. Capacity for the facility is
125,000.

The center's most distinguishing feature is the Sails Pavilion, a 90,000 sq. ft.
(8,400 m²) exhibit and special event area. The Sails Pavilion's roof consists of
distinctive Teflon-coated fiberglass "sails" intended to reflect San Diego's
maritime history, as well as to advertise the center's proximity to the San
Diego shore. The Pavilion was originally built as an open-air facility under the
roof. However, the center found it hard to convince potential users to book an
open-air facility, so the Pavilion area was enclosed in glass, greatly expanding
the usable area of the center.

Another unusual feature of the convention center is its inclined elevator,

which ascends alongside the large exterior staircase.

Special event area - 90,000 sq. ft. (8,400 m²)

Architectural design

The San Diego Convention Center is a far cry from the big boxes you might
find in other cities. Impressively fashioned to pay homage to the city of San
Diego's rich maritime history, the facility as a whole is architecturally
remarkable as it seamlessly blends beauty with functionality and some of the
individual aspects that contribute to the overall iconic design.as designed by
Canadian architect Arthur Erickson. Capacity for the facility is 125,000. The
