Construction:

The Simply Wool Blouse is worked top down with raglan increases to shape the yoke.

The sleeves are knitted in the round on double-pointed needles. The body and sleeves

are worked in stockinette stitch and nished with an i-cord edge. Finally, stitches are

picked up around the neckline and bound off to create an i-cord edge here as well.

Techniques:

Increases: You will increase on each side of a stitch (called a raglan stitch) a total of 8

times per round, every other round. The increased stitches lean towards the right and

left and are worked as follows:

M1R = make one right (increase one stitch to the right)

M1L = make one left (increase one stitch to the left)

I-cord bind off: https://www.interweave.com/article/knitting/i-cord-bind-off/

- Important: most i-cord bind off instructional videos show i-cord with 4 stitches, but this
i-cord have 3 stitches. The concept is the same, you just knit one less stitch per i-cord

sequence. This is to create at smaller i-cord tube, more delicate for a thin garment like

this blouse.

Pattern

Yoke:

Cast on 150 (170) 176 (180) 186 stitches on 4 mm [US 6] needles.

Start knitting from the middle back of the blouse. Join in the round. Place a marker here.

Knit 2 rounds of stockinette stitch.

(Keep in mind: the neckline will look too wide, but don’t worry this will be corrected by

the i-cord neckline at the end of the pattern.)

Raglan:

Place markers for raglan as follows:

29 (32) 33 (34) 35 stitches (half of the back piece)

Place marker

1 stitch (raglan)

Place marker

15 (19) 20 (20) 21 stitches (sleeve)

Follow the instructions for increases to work the raglan. The stitch between the raglan

increases is worked in stockinette stitch like the rest of the garment. You will work the

raglan increases every other round.

Start at the back of the neck.

*Knit until you reach the rst stitch marker, M1R, slip marker, knit the raglan stitch, M1L,

knit the sleeve stitches, M1R, slip marker, knit the raglan stitch, M1L, knit the front

stitches, M1R, slip marker, knit the raglan stitch, M1L knit the sleeve stitches, M1R, slip

marker, knit the raglan stitch, M1L, knit until you reach the stitch marker at the middle of

the back (= 8 increases). Knit 1 round.* Repeat from * to * 24 (25) 27 (28) 30 times in all

= 342 (370) 392 (404) 426 sts

Now the yoke is nished, and the stitches are distributed as follows:

From the middle of the back:

53 (57) 60 (62) 65 stitches (half of the back piece)

raglan stitch

63 (69) 74 (76) 81 (sleeve)

raglan stitch

106 (114) 120 (124) 130 (front)

raglan stitch

63 (69) 74 (76) 81 (sleeve)

raglan stitch
53 (57) 60 (62) 65 back (half of the back piece)

= total 342 (370) 392 (404) 426 stitches.

Body:

Now set the sleeve stitches aside, for example on a stitch saver cord, cast on new stitches

under the arms, and knit the body of the blouse. The raglan stitches will follow the

sleeves.

Work as follows:

5 of 8
fi
fi
From the middle back: knit 53 (57) 60 (62) 65) stitches (half of the back), set aside: 65

(71) 76 (78) 83 stitches (sleeve stitches + one raglan stitch on each side of the sleeve

stitches), cast on 3 (3) 4 (5) 6 stitches under arm, add marker, cast on 3 (3) 4 (5) 6 stitches

more under arm, knit 114 (120) 124 (130) stitches (front), set aside: 65 (71) 76 (78) 83

stitches (sleeve stitches + one raglan stitch on each side of the sleeve stitches), cast on 3

(3) 4 (5) 6 stitches under arm, add marker, cast on 3 (3) 4 (5) 6 stitches more under arm,

knit 53 (57) 60 (62) 65) stitches (half of the back)

Let the sleeve stitches rest while you knit the body of the blouse.

You are now in the middle back of the blouse and will knit the body of the blouse.

You have 224 (240) 256 (268) 284 stitches on the needles.

The round starts in the middle of the back.

Knit 34 (35) 36 (37) 38 cm [13.5 (13.75) 14.25 (14.5) 15 inches] in the round in

stockinette stitch.

Now you will bind off with an i-cord edge with additional decreases to prevent the edge

from curling upwards. Important: most i-cord bind off instructional videos show i-cord

with 4 stitches, but this i-cord have 3 stitches. The concept is the same, you just knit one

less stitch per i-cord sequence. This is to create at smaller i-cord tube, more delicate for a

thin garment like this blouse.

Work the i-cord bind off with decreases as follows:

Cast on 3 stitches on needle 3 mm [US 2.5] using a knitted cast on onto the left needle.

Work I-cord while binding off as follows: *knit 2 stitches, knit 2 together through the

back loop, slip the 3 stitches back onto the left needle*. Repeat * to * 6 times. Knit 2

stitches, knit 3 together through the back loop, slip the 3 stitches back onto the left

needle. This way, you bind off an additional stitch every 8th stitch while binding off.

Repeat this sequence until you have bound off all stitches.

6 of 8
Sleeves:

The sleeves are straight, with decreases only at the very bottom of the sleeve.

Sleeve length: 40 (40) 40 (40) 40cm [15.75 (15.75) 15.75 (15.75) 15.75 inches].

You will knit the sleeves in the round in stockinette stitch. Place the sleeve stitches on 4

mm [US 6] double-pointed needles.

In the stitches you cast on under the arm: pick up 3 (3) 4 (5) 6 stitches, add marker, pick

up 3 (3) 4 (5) 6 stitches. Knit one round until you reach the marker, your round will start

here underneath the arm.

You now have 71 (77) 84 (88 ) 95 stitches on the needles.

Knit 40 (40) 40 (40) 40cm [15.75 (15.75) 15.75 (15.75) 15.75 inches].

In the next round you will decrease the stitches to create a slight puf ness at the bottom

of the sleeve. Decrease round: *knit 1 stitch, knit 2 stitches together* Repeat * to * until

you have nished the round.

I-cord bind off with decreases:

The i-cord bind off on the sleeves is knitted in the same way as the i-cord bind off on the

body, except with more frequent decreases.

Switch to 3 mm [US2.5] needles.

Cast on 3 stitches on needle 3 mm [US 2.5] using a knitted cast on onto the left needle.

Work i-cord while binding off as follows: *knit 2 stitches, knit 2 together through the

back loop, slip the 3 stitches back onto the left needle*. Repeat * to * 4 times. Knit 2
stitches, knit 3 together through the back loop, slip the 3 stitches back onto the left

needle. This way, you bind off an additional stitch every 6th stitch while binding off.

Repeat this sequence until you have bound off all stitches.

Neckline:

Finally, stitches are picked up around the neckline and bound off with a neat i-cord edge.

The neckline I-cord bind off is worked in the same way as the one on the body and the

one on the sleeves except with less frequent decreses.

On 3 mm [US 3] needles, pick up 150 (170) 176 (180) 186 stitches around the neckline.

Work i-cord while binding off as follows: *knit 2 stitches, knit 2 together through the

back loop, slip the 3 stitches back onto the left needle*. Repeat * to * 9 times. Knit 2

stitches, knit 3 together through the back loop, slip the 3 stitches back onto the left

needle. This way, you bind off an additional stitch every 11th stitch while binding off.

Repeat this sequence until you have bound off all stitches.

Weave in loose ends, give the blouse a bath and let it dry laying at on a towel.
