WHAT IS ELLIPTICAL CONSTRUCTION?

Elliptical Constructions is the process of combining 2 sentences with different subjects, but
having the same verb and complement. The purpose of elliptical construction is to avoid or
reduce or even completely eliminate words that are considered unnecessary in sentences.
By using this ellipsis, the sentence will feel shorter both in terms of preparation and in
terms of meaning.
POSITIVE ELLIPSE (TOO AND SO)

So and Too are used for positive sentences and have the same meaning.
SO : sentence + and + so + aux + S
Example : Dody goes to school everyday, I go to school everyday
Be : Dody goes to school everyday and so do I
TOO : sentence + and + S + aux + too
Example : He buys a book, Agnes buys a book
Be : He buys a book and Agnes does too
NEGATIVE ELLIPTICAL (EITHER AND NEITHER)

Negative Elliptical is the process of combining 2 negative sentences that have the same
predicate (verb) (including the object and complement).
EITHER: Negative statement + and + Sub + Neg.aux or to be + Either
Example : I did’nt go to school yesterday, He did’nt go to school yeserday
Be : I didn’t go to school yesterday and he didn’t either
NEITHER: Neg.statement + and + Neither + Pos.aux or to be + Sub
Example : Ratih can’t attend the meeting, jodi can’t attend the meeting
Be : Ratih can’t attend the meeting and neither can jodi
CONTRARY ELLIPTIC (BUT)

But is used to combine two opposite sentences (One is positive and one is negative) with
the same tenses.
Positive Statement + But + Sub + Aux + Not
Example : They come here, He doesn’t come here
Be : They come here but he doesn’t
Negative Statement + But + Sub + Aux
Example : Devri can’t speak French very well, I can speak French very well
Be : Devri can’t speak French very well but I can
PENGGUNAAN (BOTH…AND)

Both and And are used to combine two positive sentences with the same verb
Both + Sub 1 + and + Sub 2 + to be + verb
Example : Seno is sleeping, Putra is sleeping
Be : Both Seno and Putra are sleeping
PENGGUNAAN (EITHER..OR + POSITIVE)

Either.. or + positive is used to express one of two activities in two sentences that have the
same tenses.
Example : I will visit my grandmother next month, My cousin will visit my grandmother
next month.
Be : Either my cousin or I will visit my grandmother next month.
PENGGUNAAN (NEITHER..NOR + POSITIVE)

Neither…nor + positive has the meaning “not both”. And have the same tenses
