Critical Reading as Reasoning
LESSON OBJECTIVES

By the end of this lesson, you are expected to:

Understand the concept critical reading as a reasoning;
Identify the steps used in critical reading as reasoning.
 Find the claim, evidence and reasoning on a given passage.
WHAT I NEED TO KNOW
Critical reading is engaging in analytic activity which involves the reader
by asking questions about the text and the author’s claim. Critical readers are
doing the process of evaluating, analyzing, and interpreting the assertion of
the hidden meaning of the entire text.
On the other hand, reasoning as defined in Merriam-Webster
dictionary, is an act of giving statements for justification and explanation. It
is the ability of someone to defend something by giving out reasons.

WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

Therefore, when reading critically, it is necessary to

question the different arguments used by the author, as
any problem can weaken the authenticity of the
conclusion.
Remember that critical reading is not meant to
criticize but to assess the validity of textual evidence.
WHAT IS CRITICAL READING?

✓ Critical reading goes beyond recognition of the text's

meaning and restating it in your own words.
✓ A critical reader does not merely skim the text at hand.
✓ To reach a solid interpretation of a text, the critical reader
must dwell on what the text does by making such remarks
beyond what it says. From this, the critical reader must
identify what the text means based on the previous
analysis.

ACCORDING TO THE WEBSITE CRITICALREADING.COM, THERE
ARE THREE STEPS OF ANALYSIS REFLECTING THE THREE TYPES
OF READING AND DISCUSSION:

1. What a text says — restatement (wherein the reader

merely restates what is said in the original text)
2. What a text does — description (wherein the reader
discusses aspects of the discussion itself)
3. What a text means — interpretation (wherein the
reader analyzes the meaning of the text as a whole).
STEPS USED IN CRITICAL READING AS REASONING
BY MAXINE RAFAELLA C. RODRIGUEZ AND MARELLA
THERESE A. TIONGSON

1. Identifying assertions
Identify by a common type of assertion such as fact,
convention, opinion, and preference
Assertions- a confident and forceful statement of fact
or belief.
2. FORMULATING A COUNTERCLAIM
Counterclaims are made to rebut a previous claim
Example: You are asking money from your mom – that is your claim
Then, your mom answers you, “I’m sorry, but I won’t give you any money.” – this is
her counterclaim.
Your mom might say that you don’t need any money since you don’t go to
school and allowance is not needed or there’s nothing you need to spend on. Now,
you are going to formulate a reason for your counterclaim.
You may say that the reason you are asking for money is to buy gift for her
upcoming birthday and she’d be very happy to receive a gift on her special day.
3. DETERMINING EVIDENCE

Evidence is the details given by the authors to support his/her claims

Note: When you write your counterclaim, you are expressing unfavorable statements.
Therefore, it is needed that you use hedges, which are words or phrases that give a courteous tone.
 Different forms of hedges
Modals: may, could, would, should, might, certain, must, etc.
Frequency adverbs: usually, generally, commonly
Probability adverbs: probably, possibly, presumably
 Example:
The common cold is caused by a virus.
 With hedges:
The common cold must be caused by a virus.
The common virus is certain to be caused by a virus.
WHAT I HAVE LEARNED

• Critical reading is a more active way of reading. It is a

deeper and more complex engagement with a text.
• When we read critically, we use our critical thinking skills
to question both the text and our own and others'
interpretation of it.
• Critical reading teaches the reader how to not blindly
accept all the presented facts without further examination.
III. LET US STRENGTHEN YOUR UNDERSTANDING

Read the passage carefully. Find the claim, the evidence, and the reasoning in the
passage. Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

Crecencian T.V.L. senior high school graduates are capable of joining the
workforce and be globally competitive skilled workers since passing the National
Competency II examination is the result of the in-depth training that they had
developed while in school. Crecencian T.V.L instructors are highly skilled in their
field of specialization. They are NC III & IV holders and have years of experience in
the industry before joining the academe. Many of the skilled graduates are now
hired by different corporations and some of them continue their college education in
connection with their chosen strand.
