SIGNAL
 A physical quantity that can carry
information.
 A signal is a real (or complex) valued

function of one or more where the function

depends on a single variable, the signal is
said to be one-dimensional variable(s).

 Signal Processing: The field of techniques

used to extract information from signals.

ANALOG SIGNAL PROCESSING
 Analog signal processing is a signal processing
conducted on analog signals by analog means.
 Analog indicates something that is
mathematically represented as a set of
continuous values.
 Analog values are typically represented as
voltage, electric current or electric charges
around components in the electronic devices.
 Example of analog signal processing include

crossover filters in loud speakers, “bass”, and

“volume” controls on stress and “tint” controls on
TVs.
 Common analog processing elements include 4

capacitors, resistors, inductors and transistors.

DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING
 Digital signal processing is an area of science
and engineering which has developed very
rapidly over the last few decades.
 The roots of Digital Signal Processing are from

1960’s and 1970’s when computers first become

available.
 The efforts were first made in four key areas.
 Radar and Sonar (where national security was at
risk)
 Oil Exploration (where large amount of money could
be made)
 Space Exploration (where the data are irreplaceable)
 Medical Imaging (where lives could be saved) 5
DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING
(CONT..)
 Digital Signal Processing is a method of
extracting information from the signal which
in turn depends upon the type of signal and
the nature of information it carries.
 Digital Signal Processing is the mathematics

of algorithms and the techniques used to

manipulate the signals after they have been
converted into the digital form.
 Application of DSP
 VisualImages
 Recognition and generation of speech
 Compression 6
of data for storage and
transmission
DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING
(CONT..)
 Digital Signal Processing is the numerical
processing of signals on a digital computer or
some other data processing machine.
 A digital system such as digital computer takes a

signal in Discrete-time Sequence form and

converts into discrete time output sequence.
 Advantages
 DSP provide higher accuracy
 Easily stored on magnetic media (disk) without loss
of signal
 DSP allows for the implementation of more
sophisticated signal processing algorithm. It is very
difficult to perform precise mathematical operations 7
on signals in the analog form.
BASIC ELEMENTS OF SIGNAL
PROCESSING
 Most of the signals are analog in nature.
 DSP provides method for processing the

analog signal.
 For digital Processing, there is a need for

interface between the analog signal and the

digital signal processor.

This interface is called analog to digital (A/D)

converter. Its output is digital that is 8
appropriate as an input to digital processor.
KEY OPERATIONS OF DSP
 There are five key DSP operations that make
a base to acquire knowledge of DSP. These
are:
 Convolution
 Correlation
 Filtering
 Transformation
 Modulation
